The Inglenook Book Club held its monthly meeting on May 11 at Lakeside Senior Living Community in McKenzie with 20 members present. Our hostesses were Carolyn Goodwin and Elaine Williams. The tables were decorated for Spring, and one plate at each table had a smiley face underneath, and the member setting at that place took home a beautiful spring annual plant. Delicious cherry cobbler, ice cream, and assorted beverages were served.

President Carolyn Moore called the meeting to order and thanked the hostesses. The Pledge of Allegiance, Club Aim and Motto were recited by all.

Thank you was extended to Victoria Ard for calling members prior to the meeting as a friendly reminder.

Roll Call was followed by the reading of the April minutes by the recording secretary and approved by all. Treasurer Donna Ward gave the treasurer’s report, which was also approved.

Our Sunshine chair, Sheila Rogers announced there were no May birthdays.

Membership chair, Suzanne Howell mentioned if anyone had a name or names of interested persons who wanted to become a member of the book club, to please pass the names(s) to her. There were no other committee reports.

President Moore stated 36 boxes of crayons were donated to the school, and the teachers very much appreciated all we do for the students. There was no old business, and new business consisted of the mentioning of a past program and program booklet cover that was donated to the club by a past member. President Moore will pass the booklet cover to the next new member.

Our program was presented by Zia Locke, who filled in for Sandi McMahen. She spoke to us about the best-selling author of Elvis Cole novels and an American author of detective fiction-Robert Crais. Crais was born June 20, 1953 in Independence, Louisiana. Adopted and raised as an only child, he grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River in a blue-collar family of oil refinery workers and police officers. At age 15, he purchased a secondhand paperback of Raymond Chandler’s “The Little Sister,” which inspired his lifelong love of writing, Los Angeles, and crime fiction literature. After years of amateur film-making and writing short fiction, he traveled to Hollywood in 1976, where he quickly found work writing scripts for major television series such as Hill Street Blues, Cagney & Lacey, and Miami Vice, as well as numerous series pilots and Movies-of-the-Week for major networks. He received an Emmy nomination for his work on Hill Street Blues, but is most proud of his 4-hour NBC miniseries, Cross of Fire

In the mid-eighties, Crais pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a novelist. Upon the death of his father in 1985, Crais was inspired to create Elvis Cole, using elements of his own life as the basis of the story. Resulting with the novel “The Monkey’s Raincoat” which won the Anthony and Macavity Awards and was nominated for the Edgar Award.

The novels of Robert Crais have been published in 62 countries and are the bestsellers around the world. Crais is a caring, thorough person who says “I’m going to do what I’m going to do”, “You know I’m a writer, I’m a storyteller, I’m using characters to explore things I want to explore. I just hope that books are entertaining.“

Robert currently lives in the Santa Monica mountains with his wife, two cats, and many thousands of books.

Book passing was done by Mary Newman, with the next passing date of May 25.

There were no further announcements, and our next meeting will be on June 8 at Lakeside, with hostesses Jean Hollomon and Suzanne Russell. Program will be presented by Beverly Mueller. Bring spiral notebooks for the monthly donation to McKenzie school.

The benediction was recited by all and the meeting was adjourned.
