McKenzie Rebels, Lady Rebels Win District Titles

ERIN — The McKenzie Lady Rebels wasted no time taking command of the District 11A Softball tournament defeating Big Sandy 4-1 while McEwen defeated host Houston County to set up the District Championship game between McKenzie and McEwen on Wednesday, May 11.

After a scoreless first inning for both teams, McKenzie scored first with a run in the bottom of the second inning to lead 1-0. The Lady Irish took the lead 2-1, after a scoreless third inning, with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Lady Rebels tied the game 2-2 with a solo run in the bottom of the fifth inning. After holding Houston County scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Rebels scored two runs to take a 4-2 lead and held the Lady Irish scoreless in the top of the seventh to earn the win and the District Title.

Payton Ognibene and Briley Auvenshine shared time on the mound. Ognibene pitched the first four innings giving up three hits, two runs, walking three batters and striking out three batters. Auvenshine came in the fifth inning giving up two hits, walking one and striking out four batters earning the win.

Savannah Davis led the Lady Rebels at the plate with three hits getting a bunt, a single, and a triple driving in a run and scoring a run. Jaden Barton got a base hit driving in a run while Briley Auvenshine got on base with a single. Anna Robinson hit a single and scored a run. Kassidy Brown got a base hit driving in a run and Taylor Rawls drew a walk and later scored.

Following the game, plaques were given for District Runner-Up and District Champion. Four Lady Rebels were selected to the All-District team including Kassidy Brown, Payton Ognibene, and Savannah Davis. Briley Auvenshine was named District 11A MVP.

ERIN — The Rebels opened District Tournament action at home against Big Sandy on Thursday, May 5 defeating the Red Devils 20-0 in three innings. Houston County defeated McEwen to set up a District Title game between McKenzie and Houston County on Monday, May 9. The Rebels defeated the Irish 17-0 to win the District Title.

McKenzie rolled 13 runs in the bottom of the first inning and added four final runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to reach 17 runs. The Rebels tapped out 16 hits in the game with several recording multiple hits. Hayden Hixon hit a base hit, a double, and blasted a home run driving in two runs and scoring three runs. Collin McLearen had a pair of base hits that drove in two runs and scored two runs. Jake McDaniel hit a pair of doubles driving in a run and scoring one. Ty Anderson ripped one double and drew a walk driving in two runs and scored two runs. Jackson Cassidy also ripped two doubles driving in two runs and scoring two runs. Zayden McCaslin had a base hit and a double driving in three runs and scoring two runs. Tate Surber had a pair of doubles driving in two runs and scoring two runs. Nolen Renfro had a base hit that drove in a run and scored two runs. Braden Birmingham had a base hit that drove in a run and scored a run.

McKenzie’s Jake McDaniel went the distance on the mound throwing a no-hitter against the Irish striking out 10 batters in the process.

Six Rebels were named to the All-District team including Zayden McCaslin, Ty Anderson, Jake McDaniel, Collin McLearen, Hayden Hixon, and Jackson Cassidy was named District MVP.
