ATWOOD (February 27) — West Carroll High School hosted the conclusion of the District 13A Girls Basketball Tournament Wednesday. The host Lady War Eagles went down to the wire in the consolation game before Halls took the win, 45-42. In another thriller, Middleton claimed the championship over Humboldt, 46-43.
Following the games, district awards were presented.
The District 13A All-Academic Team included Clarksburg’s Libby Autry, Sam Segraves and Maleigha Abdallah.
The All-District team included Clarksburg’s Sam Segraves.
The All-Tournament team included West Carroll’s Hailey Mitchell.
Consolation:
Halls Lady Tigers 45, West Carroll Lady War Eagles 42
The first frame was a 7-7 wash. Lady War Eagles Hailey Mitchell, Alayna Lovelace and Chloe Rimmer each had a pair, and Aubrey Hammett hit a free throw. Lady Tigers Kearston Mack, Diamond Williams and Taylor Patrick each had a pair, and Chrisstahl Gordon hit a free throw.
Halls had a 13-12 edge in the second quarter, led by Mack with ten points, including a trio of three-pointers. Williams added a pair, and Gordon hit another free throw. West Carroll’s Gracelyn Vernon scored eight with a pair of threes, and Mitchell and Rimmer each added a pair. At the half, Halls led 20-19.
The Lady Tigers had a 12-9 advantage in the third, led by Williams with four points. Addie Hilliard hit a three, and Mack also scored three points. Patrick added a pair. Mitchell hit a three for West Carroll, and Vernon, Triniti Adkisson and Abbi O’Bryan each had a pair. Heading into the final frame, Halls led 32-28.
A Lady War Eagle rally in the fourth came up just short at 14-13, led by Vernon with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Mitchell and Marissa Mueller each hit a three. Gordon led Halls with five points. Williams scored three. Patrick and Aniyah Crew each had a pair, and Mack hit a freebie.
Lady War Eagle Gracelyn Vernon led all scorers with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Hailey Mitchell scored ten with a pair of threes.
Kearston Mack led Halls with 16 points, including a trio of threes. Diamond Williams had eleven points.
Championship:
Middleton Lady Tigers 46, Humboldt Lady Vikings 43
The Lady Vikings had a 14-13 edge after the opening frame, but Middleton took control for a 25-20 lead at the half. Humboldt cut the deficit to a point going into the final frame, but the Lady Tigers had a 12-10 advantage in the fourth to clinch the win.
Lady Viking Kendall McLemore led all scorers with 23 points.
Harmony Bell led Middleton with 19 points.
