  • Unemployment Rates Rise Slightly in Tri-Counties

    NASHVILLE — Eighty-two of Tennessee’s 95 counties reported unemployment rates below 5% in January even as most counties saw an uptick in their rates over the previous month, according to newly released data from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD).

  • 40 Dead in Severe Weather Rampage

    UNITED STATES (March 14-16) — The Ides of March was particularly deadly on Friday and Saturday with an estimated 40 people dying as severe weather rampaged across seven states. Tornadoes, flooding, wildfires, an earthquake and even a dust storm in Kansas added to the body count when a 71-vehicle pile-up on I-70 killed eight people.

    TREZEVANT (March 11) — The Trezevant Board met Tuesday in regular session with a full quorum. Aldermen took action on several items, but, most consequentially, heard updates on water system projects from Davina Gurschick, project manager for Community Development Partners, and David Smith, site and infrastructure practice leader for A2H.

    NASHVILLE (March 17) — Tennessee lawmakers are advancing legislation that would allow public schools to deny enrollment to undocumented students, directly challenging a 1982 U.S. Supreme Court ruling and placing over $1.1 billion in federal education funding at risk.

  • Huntingdon Appoints Interim Police, Fire Chiefs

    HUNTINGDON (March 11) — The Huntingdon Town Council held a special meeting on March 11 at Huntingdon City Hall to formally appoint Jason Oliver as Interim Chief of Police and John Fordon as Interim Fire Chief.

  • County Agrees to $10 Million Reimbursement For Electric Department

    HUNTINGDON (March 3) — The Carroll County Commission approved Resolution 3-01-2025 — Declaring the intent to reimburse itself or the Carroll County Board of Public Utilities for the principal amounts of bonds or other debt obligations expected to be issued to finance the new headquarters construction project for the Carroll County Electric Department.

    NASHVILLE (March 14) — The Tennessee General Assembly is currently considering SB1310/HB1332, a bill that would expand charter school access and allow certain charter operators to bypass local school boards. The proposed legislation has sparked renewed debate over local control, accountability, and its connection to the newly enacted Education Freedom Scholarship Act (HB0001), which expands school vouchers statewide.

    ERIN (March 14) — McKenzie High School opened district softball play Friday with a road contest at Houston County. The host Lady Irish took an early lead, but the Lady Rebels pulled closer with fourth-inning home runs by Braylin Auvenshine and Ady Freeman before falling, 8-5.

    DYER (March 13) — The McKenzie High School Rebels traveled to Gibson County High School Thursday to face Dyersburg in nondistrict baseball action. A big third inning was the difference for the Trojans as they took the win, 11-5.

  • Gasoline Prices Rise During Week

    TENNESSEE (March 17) — Average gasoline prices in Tennessee increased 4.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.68/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 3,821 stations in Tennessee. Prices in Tennessee are 8.3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 38.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has decreased 5.0 cents in the last week and stands at $3.558 per gallon.
