Theft/Simple Possession — McKenzie Police were dispatched to the corner of Cherry Avenue and Laurel Street in regards to a vehicle playing excessively loud music. They found no driver in the car but did find the owner in a nearby apartment taking a shower according to a female who spoke to the officers. She came out to turn the car off and once the door was opened, the officers could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The owner, Marquavius Cunningham, 23, of Humboldt came out and was asked about the marijuana odor which he denied and told the officer he needed a search warrant. Sgt. Justin Brister advised him there was probable cause to search the vehicle and didn’t need a search warrant. Cunningham admitted to Brister that his brother’s gun was in the vehicle along with a small amount of marijuana in the console of the vehicle.

Brister, along with Patrolman Trenton Ruddy, searched the vehicle and found the gun and marijuana along with $510 in cash. A check of the gun’s serial number revealed that it had been reported stolen in Dickson County in 2017. Cunningham was arrested and charged with Theft Under $1,000 and Simple Possession of Schedule VI Drug and transported to Carroll County Jail.

Driving on Suspended/Revoked License — On Saturday morning, January 29, patrolman Trenton Ruddy conducted a traffic stop on Hwy 79 on a Chevy Trailblazer. The driver, Richard Ballew, 41, of McKenzie was questioned by Ruddy and revealed he did not have a license. Dispatch confirmed that his license was revoked and he had a prior charge for Driving on Revoked in 2017. Ballew was cited for Driving on Revoked/Suspended License-2nd Offense.

Child Abuse/Neglect — A Hamilton Street Apartments resident contacted McKenzie Police on Saturday night, January 29 concerning a possible domestic incident and the well-being of a small child. The caller advised that a neighbor came to his apartment seeking help and had reason to believe a domestic incident occurred between the neighbor and her father.

The victim, identified as Shawfon Renea Powell, 26, of McKenzie, was questioned by police officers and found to be impaired. According to the police report, her apartment appearance was consistent with a domestic incident taking place. Relatives were called to take the child and Powell was arrested and charged with child abuse and neglect along with public intoxication.
