McKenzie Teachers Prepare for August 2

Posted
The McKenzie Special School District faculty and staff are spending the last week before school starts in inservice, preparing to welcome students back August 2.

Inservice began Monday, July 25, with district-wide training rotations. All district staff met at McKenzie High School and were divided into three rooms based on their local school. McKenzie Elementary School staff met in the library, McKenzie Middle School staff met in Mrs. Mallory Fowler’s classroom, and McKenzie High School staff met in Ms. Brittany Colotta’s classroom.

Monday’s session included three rotations. In one, teachers learned about PowerTeacherPro, the school’s online gradebook. Ladona Herrin instructed teachers on federal programs and requirements, and the last rotation instructed teachers on teaching special populations (Special Education and English as a Second Language students).

Following rotations, teachers were instructed on Code Adam, a search tool for lost and potentially abducted children, and Canva, a free graphic design platform.

Also Monday, the district’s two School Resource Officers (SROs) were announced. Residing SRO Nick Lowe and Officer Andy Weaver will rotate between the three schools and at ball games during the 2022-23 school year.

Teachers will attend inservice at their local schools for the remainder of the week. There, they will learn about programs and requirements specific to their grade level or subject matter.

McKenzie Elementary, McKenzie Middle, and McKenzie High School host orientations July 28. McKenzie Elementary School’s “Meet the Teacher” and McKenzie Middle School’s Open House are from 1-6 p.m. McKenzie High School Freshman Orientation begins at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

Friday, July 29, educators from across the county will meet at The Dixie in Huntingdon to hear Gerry Brooks and Chuck Cagle speak. Motivational speaker Gerry Brooks speaks to staff from 9-10:30 a.m., and attorney Chuck Cagle speaks from 12-3 p.m.

Monday, August 1, is the last day of teacher inservice. Students return to school August 2 for a half day.
