McKenzie Wins District 11A Championships

McEWEN — McKenzie’s Lady Rebels and Rebels went back in action last Friday, February 18, each playing for District Championships against Houston County at McEwen High School.

Lady Rebels 66, Lady Irish 46
McKenzie built a comfortable 22-14 lead by the end of the first period and extended the lead slightly by halftime 33-23. The two teams both scored 14 points in the third period but the Lady Rebels still maintained a 47-37 lead. They exploded for 19 points in the fourth period to blow the game open by the end winning 66-46.

Savannah Davis and Mikaela Reynolds led the Lady Rebels with 25 and 22 points respectively. Kylie Reynolds added eight points while Katie Chesser and Dani Dyer had four points each. Briley Auvenshine had three for the Lady Rebels.

Houston County was led by Josey Gant with 26 points followed by R’Shonte’ Kizer with seven points. Kennedy Jones and Karlie Stinson had four and three points respectively while Tess Gillespie, Haylie Brooks, and CJ Clark chipped in two points each for the Lady Irish.

McKenzie Lady Rebels named to All-District Team include Dani Dyer, Kylie Reynolds, Mikaela Reynolds, and Savannah Davis was named District Co-MVP along with Houston County’s Josey Gant. McKenzie Coach John Wilkins was named Coach of the Year for the girls.

Rebels 46, Irish 37
The Rebels have really come on strong in the latter part of the regular season and into the district tournament with a solid win over Big Sandy and took on the Houston County Irish for the district title.

Both teams played a fairly even first period with McKenzie leading 13-10 going into the second period. The Rebels extended the lead slightly to lead 23-18 at the half. The third period saw the two teams play evenly 9-9 with the Rebels holding a 32-27 advantage. McKenzie outscored Houston County 14-10 winning the contest 46-37 and clinching the district title.

Three Rebels were named to the All-District Team including Bryson Steele, Marquez Taylor and Zayden McCaslin.

Both the Lady Rebels and Rebels will host first round Region 6 games before going to West Carroll for the remainder of the tournament.
