McKenzie High School Basketball Off To Good Start

McKenzie’s High School teams are off to a good start on the 21-22 season. They opened up on the road at Greenfield on Thursday, November 18 and swept the Lady Jackets and Yellow Jackets.

Lady Rebels 51, Lady Yellowjackets 41
Both teams got off to a slow start in the first period with McKenzie leading 7-5 after one period. Savannah Davis had all of the Lady Rebels points during the period. The Lady Rebels heated up in the second period outscoring Greenfield 17-9 to hold a 24-14 lead at halftime.

Greenfield came out the third period outscoring the Lady Rebels 13-7 to make a closer game of it 31-27 by the end of three periods. The Lady Rebels secured the win with a 20-14 fourth period for the win.

Lady Rebel Savannah Davis led all scorers with 25 points followed by Kylie Reynolds with 11 points and Dani Dyer with 10 points. Mikaela Reynolds added five for the Lady Rebels.

Greenfield was led by Edie Darby with 14 points and Emma Grace Alford with 10 points. Paige Glisson and Anastyn Vujicic had six points each while Emma Cooper, Halle Trevathan, and Mattie Winberry chipped in two, two and one point respectively.

Rebels 52, Yellowjackets 46
The boys tipped off their season short-handed since some of their athletes are still playing football. McKenzie trailed 13-9 after the first period and took a slim 18-17 lead by halftime.

The Rebels extended their lead outscoring the Yellowjackets 21-16 in the third period to take a 39-33 lead into the final period. The Rebels maintained their lead in the fourth period and got their season-opening win.

Lone Senior Zayden McCaslin led the Rebels with 21 points followed by Bryson Steele with 15 points. Bryant Haynes and Carter Kee added eight points and six points respectively while Christopher Beck chipped in two points for the Rebels.

Barkley Biggs and Matt Scates led Greenfield with 16 and 15 points respectively while Luke Stone and Omarion Miles added seven points each. Carson Wells chipped in a point for the Yellowjackets.

On Saturday, November 20, the Lady Rebels played two games against Union City and Obion Central while the Rebels played Dresden in Hall of Champion games at McKenzie.

Lady Rebels 57, Lady Tornadoes 44
Union City took an early 4-1 lead in the opening period with McKenzie tying it 4-4 with a three-pointer. The Lady Rebels took a brief 6-4 lead halfway through the period and were outscored 13-0 during the final four minutes of the period trailing 17-6 at the end of one.

The Lady Rebels got hot in the second period closing the deficit to 25-16 a little more than halfway through the period. A 9-0 McKenzie run tied the score 25-25 with a half-minute left until halftime. Union City hit a basket with seconds remaining to take a 27-25 lead into halftime.

McKenzie hit two quick baskets to take a 29-27 lead in the opening minute of the third period. They held Union City to just one point during the first six minutes of the period and held a 41-30 lead heading into the final period. The Lady Rebels opened up the lead to 46-30 near the midway point of the period and went on to win it.

Savannah Davis led McKenzie with 19 points followed by Kylie and Mikaela Reynolds with 11 and 10 points respectively. Katie Chesser added nine points from three three-pointers while Dani Dyer and Briley Auvenshine chipped in four points each.

Union City’s Amari Bonds led all scorers with 28 points. Sophie Theobald, Khia German, and Adaiysha Snow added four points each. Marlee Theobald had three points and Ada Rogers chipped in a point.

Rebels 58, Lions 33
The Rebels hit the floor next for a contest against the Dresden Lions. Similar to the previous girls game, the Rebels found themselves trailing early due to multiple three-pointers by the Lions. McKenzie trailed 23-14 at the end of one period.

The second period saw the Rebels get hot and erased the deficit to tie it 25-25 with four minutes left in the period. The Rebels went on to hold a 31-27 lead at halftime.

McKenzie turned it into a double-digit lead by the end of the third period 46-33. They added 12 more points in the final period while holding Dresden scoreless to win the contest.

Bryson Steele and Zaiden McCaslin led the Rebels with 20 and 17 points respectively. Bryant Haynes added nine points while Christopher Beck had six points. Carter Kee and Hayden Garrett chipped in three points each for Mckenzie.

Dresden was led by Steven Hobeck with 13 points. Trey Adams added six points while Meese Bell had five points. Chandler Turnbow had four points while Porter Finney and Tatum Oliver chipped in three and two points respectively.

McKenzie 64, Obion Central 44
The Lady Rebels stepped on the floor again for their second game of the afternoon against Obion Central’s Lady Rebels. The first period was a low scoring affair with McKenzie leading 14-8 at the end of one.

Five quick points gave McKenzie a 19-8 lead in the first minute of the second period. They extended the lead to 23-10 by the midway point and led 29-15 at halftime. A strong third period saw the Lady Rebels outscore Obion 22-16 to lead 51-31 heading into the final period. McKenzie stayed hot in the fourth period maintaining a twenty-point lead until the end of the contest.

McKenzie’s Savannah Davis led all scorers with 29 points followed by Mikaela Reynolds with 18 points. Briley Auvenshine and Kylie Reynolds had seven points each while Hannah Dillingham chipped in three for the Lady Rebels.

Obion Central was led by Kendall Crabtree with 11 points followed by Hannah Taylor with six points. Bren Martin and Mayra Fussell had five each while Janie Roberts, Sara Beth Key, and Anna Brooke Correa had four points each. Jaylin Beasley and Shelby Craws chipped in three points and two points respectively.

The Lady Rebels improve to 3-0 while the Rebels are 2-0 playing without several of their athletes that are still playing football. They travel to USJ this week and then take a break for Thanksgiving before hosting USJ on Monday, November 29.
