MHS Sends Teams to State Tournaments for Sixth Time This Year

Posted

Wow what a year! McKenzie High has sent six different sports teams to the State Tournaments this year. This is a historical first for MHS athletes reaching the state level so many times during the same school year.

Lady Rebel Golf — Won the District and Region Tournaments and finished 6th in the State Tournament last October.

Rebel Football — Even in the pre-season, noises were being made that the Rebels could have a really good football season. As it turned out, it wasn’t noise. In a pre-season contest, the Rebels had a good showing against Martin Westview who won the Class AA State Title. After a convincing opening game win over Huntingdon, the Rebels were off to the races finishing their regular season 10-0 before entering the playoffs.

The first playoff opponent was Moore County’s Raiders. The Rebels rolled to a 63-12 playoff win and moved on to the second week against Cornersville. The Rebel defense played a huge role in this game allowing Cornersville nothing while scoring four times for a 28-0 win. Week 3 pitted the Rebels against the 2020 State Class A champion Fayetteville Tigers in a cold weather tight football contest won by McKenzie 14-8.

The State Semifinals were in the friendly confines of Rebel Field against Trenton Peabody’s Golden Tide. The Rebels survived a 36-30 barn-burner to earn their trip to the State Championship against South Pittsburg. They held the lead at halftime and it slipped away in the second half as the Pirates won the Championship.

Lady Rebels Basketball — While the Rebel Football team was busy with their trip to the state championship, basketball season had started with the Lady Rebels winning several games to start the season. They soon became the team to beat as they marched into the playoffs winning the District and Region Tournaments. They changed locations and floors and kept marching bringing home the Class A State Championship.

Rebel Basketball — Many thought the Rebels would struggle on the hardwood with several of the basketball players still playing football for much of the first half of the season. That wasn’t the case as they won four of their first five games before the other players joined them. They rolled their way to a state tournament berth in March.

Rebel Baseball — The Rebels had a solid regular season rolling into tournament season winning the District and Region Tournaments along with the Substate game and now will face University School-Johnson City at Rockvale in the first round of the state tournament Tuesday, May 24.

Rebel Soccer — The Soccer Rebels played everyone tough during an up-and-down regular season and got hot towards the end of the season. They defeated Union City and Westview for the District Title. They defeated Memphis School of Excellence and Westview for the Region Title and earned a trip to Murfreesboro with a substate win over Memphis East. They play Tuesday, May 24 against STEM Prep Academy.
