Rebels Sweep Home-Away Set with Tigers

BRUCETON/McKENZIE (April 8-9) — McKenzie High School traveled Tuesday and hosted Wednesday for two district baseball contests against Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central, earning a convincing sweep.

Tuesday, the Rebels took a 10-4 road win. The next day, at home, McKenzie brought out the big bats for a 17-1 victory that included grand slams by Tate Surber and Craegen Travis.

In Tuesday’s road win, McKenzie struck first with a pair in the top of the first and pulled away with three more in the third and one in the fourth. The Tigers got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Rebels added four in the sixth, and Central tacked on a run in the seventh.

Rebel Tate Surber was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored. Fletcher Holt went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Avery Brown hit 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Cooper Davidson was 2-for-4. Craegen Travis was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. Maddox Shiell was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Xander Johnsey was 1-for-5 with a run scored. Cole Brown went 0-for-2 with three walks, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Tiger Braxton Howard was 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base. Drake Hollingsworth went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Braden Maness hit 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Parker Finley was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Cole Brown earned the win for McKenzie, allowing three earned runs on no hits while striking out seven and walking four over three and two-thirds innings. Avery Brown threw three innings of relief, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out four and walking none. Xander Johnsey pitched the final third of an inning.

Braden Maness took the loss for Central, allowing five earned runs on four hits while striking out one and walking five in two innings. Drake Hollingsworth pitched five innings in relief, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out four and walking three.

In Wednesday’s home win, McKenzie set the tone with ten runs in the bottom of the first, adding a run in the second and five more in the third. Central scored a run in the top of the fourth, and the Rebels responded with a final run in the home half.

Rebel Craegen Travis was 3-for-4 with a grand slam, a triple, a double, five RBIs and two runs scored. Tate Surber was 3-for-3 with a grand slam, five RBIs and three runs scored. Cole Brown went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a stolen base. Maddox Shiell hit 1-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Xander Johnsey was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Avery Brown was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Ripken Thompson batted 1-for-1 with a stolen base. Cooper Davidson was 0-for-1 with three walks, two RBIs and a run scored. Fletcher Holt went 0-for-1 with a walk and two runs scored.

Tiger Parker Finley was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Braden Maness went 1-for-2 with a walk. Tanner Walkers was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Tate Surber earned the complete-game win for McKenzie, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out ten and walking six in five innings.

Tanner Walters had the start for Central, allowing 16 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits while striking out two and walking two in two and a third innings. Parker Finley threw the final inning and two-thirds, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out one and walking two.
