Solar Project in Trezevant Might Be Delayed

HUNTINGDON (March 24) — The Board of Directors of the Carroll County Electric Department learned a large solar project in Trezevant has a new expected completion date of 2024. The board also learned Thursday of Carroll County Electric Department’s General Manager’s, Danny Brawner, plan to retire in June. (See separate story).

In February, the board approved a letter of intent with a division of Silicon Ranch to construct a 6.25-megawatt solar array (farm) in Trezevant. S.R. Trezevant, LLC, a proposed Delaware Corporation operating in Tennessee, would be principal entity with Silicon Ranch as a major investor.

In January, Brawner said the proposed solar farm installation would be an 118-acre solar farm near the CCED’s power substation on Power Station Road in Trezevant.

The proposed 6.25-megawatt array, would be bigger than the one along Interstate 40 near Brownsville.

The contract calls for CCED to purchase the solar-produced power from Silicon Ranch at a rate of 4.4 cents per kilowatt-hour. That’s cheaper than purchasing through TVA with an average rate of 6-6.4-cent per kilowatt-hour. TVA created the flexible energy program that allows local power distributors to purchase up to five percent of its power demand from a green-power producer.

Ryan Drewry, office manager, said the system will save an estimated $250,000 annually by tapping the solar-generated power.

S.R. Trezevant, LLC covers all the installation costs. He said the substation needs a new circuit breaker that costs $100,000. He hoped Silicon Ranch would also cover that cost.

In other business, the board approved a $1,000 donation to TVA’s Community Care Fund, which is matched by TVA and returned to the CCED to assist electric customers with financial difficulties and unable to pay their utility bill.
