West Carroll Splits with Frank Hughes

West Carroll’s War Eagles managed to get a district double header against Frank Hughes despite inclement weather around the area on Monday, April 11.

Game 1
The first game was a heartbreaker for the War Eagles losing the lead late in a 5-4 loss. The game was tied 3-3 with Frank Hughes batting in the bottom of the sixth inning when an error scored a run for the Lions.

West Carroll got things started with their first run coming in on a ground out. Frank Hughes took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning and added another run in the third inning to extend their lead to 3-1. The War Eagles tied the game 3-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when Frank Hughes broke the tie with a solo run 4-3. West Carroll tied it 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning but the Lions plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning handing the War Eagles a loss.

Parker McAfee and Nolan Grant had multiple hits for West Carroll with each of them collecting two hits apiece. The War Eagles posted five hits for the game.

Seth Edwards toed the rubber for West Carroll allowing four hits and four runs over five and a third innings while striking out six batters. McAfee finished the game in relief throwing one and a third innings to finish the game.

Game 2
West Carroll snagged a late lead to defeat Frank Hughes 8-5. The game was tied 5-5 with the War Eagles batting in the top of the ninth inning when an error allowed two runners to score giving West Carroll the lead.

The War Eagles scored first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and three more runs in the top of the second earning an early 5-0 lead. The Lions got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning making it 5-2. After no score in the fourth inning, Frank Hughes tied the game 5-5 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game remained tied with no scores in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. West Carroll plated three runs in the top of the ninth inning to win the contest.

West Carroll collected eight hits on the day with Jose Martinez and Jason Langston each managing multiple hits. Martinez had three hits while Langston had two hits for the War Eagles. Langston nailed two hits for the game.

Brock Polinski started the game on the mound for West Carroll lasting four and a third innings allowing six hits and five runs while striking out three. Parker McAfee came in and earned the victory allowing no runs on one hit and striking out nine batters.

The split gives West Carroll a 7-7 record on the season.
