West Carroll School Board Discusses Calendar, Policies

Posted
West Carroll School Board met in their monthly session on Thursday June 2 with items ranging from approving upcoming field trips to making adjustments to the school calendar to making policy changes.

After approving the agenda and consent agenda which included the resignations of Anne Avery and Alicia Cooper, Director Preston Caldwell acknowledged he missed adding some mandatory dates on the school calendar that should have been on there. The board approved the amended school calendar for 2022-23.

The board approved a football field trip to Hopkinsville, Kentucky to participate in a 7-7 camp and competition. The board passed the first reading and also waived the second reading on the field trip. Board members also passed the second reading of a West Carroll FBLA trip. A field trip to Florida for the West Carroll Lady War Eagle Basketball team was approved by the board on second reading.

School Director Preston Caldwell announced there were multiple bids on chairs and desks. School Outfitters was approved with a low bid of $27,951.55 which included a lifetime warranty on the desks and a five-year warranty on the chairs. Self-Assembly will be required on the chairs and desks. Caldwell noted that Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds would pay for the chairs and desks.

Director Caldwell introduced updates to West Carroll Special School District Policies noting West Carroll is on the state’s school updates program. The first update was to policy 6.306 regarding Interference/Disruption of School Activities. The policy outlines a process of identifying interference and disruptions incidents. Policy 6.306.1 requires a written request for action on Interference and Disruption incidents. The board passed both policies on first reading.

Another policy was 6.206 which is a Tennessee School Board Association policy dealing with transfers within the school system. Director Caldwell said this policy really doesn’t apply to West Carroll but it had to be placed in the policies manual due to it being a TSBA policy.

All of the principals acknowledged during their updates that May was a busy month and everything went well for the close of the school year. Director Caldwell stated “We had a great year” and complimented all of the principals for their hard work. He acknowledged “Thoughts and Prayers” to the victims and survivors of the Uvalde, Texas school shooting.

Caldwell noted he, along with principals and school security officers for the school system, have met discussing ideas for improved safety equipment and procedures. Caldwell announced the water heater approved at the last school board meeting has been obtained and installed. He noted he met with State and County Road Personnel regarding school access to the new highway bypass currently under construction coming from Milan. He said there is an access road in the plans.

With no more activity on the agenda, the board voted to adjourn until their July 7 meeting.
