West Carroll Jr., Sr. High School Responds to Shooting Threat Rumor

Posted

West Carroll Jr./Sr. High School responded to rumored threats of violence with an increased law enforcement presence Wednesday morning, October 6.

West Carroll Special School District Superintendent Preston Caldwell said that the increase in law enforcement at the school was in response to a rumor circulating through text messages that there would be a school shooting that day. Caldwell reported that nothing came of the supposed threat, and that it was just a rumor.

“Thankfully, all we found was a rumor,” Caldwell said.

Several parents posted on a now-deleted Facebook post about the rumor saying that they would not send their children to school that Wednesday out of concerns for their safety. The post had a screenshot of a text message allegedly sent to a student’s phone warning them not to go to school tomorrow and that there would be a “shooting.” Nothing came of the threats.

Caldwell said that no students have been investigated or disciplined in relation to the rumor.

Carroll County Sheriff Andy Dickson said his department is investigating, but were unsure of the source of the text message. In prior years, the school contracted with the Sheriff’s Department for the student resource officer. However, this year, the school uses a different service.
