    The Bethel/Eastside Family and Community Education (FCE) met at the lake for their June 8 meeting. Seven ladies attended. Danita Laman called the meeting to order and read the Family and Community Education Club Prayer. Meeting hostess Gail Eubanks gave the devotion, using “Ask the Expert.” She quoted Bible verse Luke 11:10. The day’s thought was read, and last meeting’s minutes were read and approved.

    Lakeside Senior Living Community in McKenzie was the location for the June 14 monthly meeting of the Inglenook Book Club, with 19 members present. President Carolyn Moore called the meeting to order at 3 p.m. by thanking hostesses Gayron Lyles and Pedie Pedersen for serving delicious German Chocolate Cake along with assorted beverages.

  • Tennessee Shows Increase in College-Going Rate for Students

    NASHVILLE (June 15) — The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) is thrilled to announce the release of the college-going rate for the Class of 2022. The data for the Class of 2022 showcases a one and a half percentage point increase over the class of 2021, for a statewide college-going rate of 54.3%. This represents the largest statewide increase since the implementation of Tennessee Promise in 2015.

  • Chappell Places in Juneteenth 5K Race

    NASHVILLE (June 19) — Allie Chappell placed second in the women’s group and eighth overall in the Music City Juneteenth Freedom Day 5K in Nashville. 160 runners participated in Nashville’s inaugural Juneteenth 5K walk/run, and 111 were women. The event began at Nashville’s historic Shelby Park.

  • Bruceton, Trezevant, Gleason Among 131 to Receive State Water Grants

    NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) today announced 131 grants totaling $299,228,167 from the state’s American Rescue Plan (ARP) fund, a Biden administration federal program. TDEC is administering part of those federal dollars in the form of drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure grants. Since August, TDEC has awarded and announced $933,632,711 in grant funds through ARP programming.

  • Amber Wright Wins Intercollegiate Broadcasting Award

    McKenzie High School alum Amber Wright earned the Best Sports Play-By-Play Award during February’s Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards in New York. Wright and her broadcasting partner, Davis Gregory, broadcast through the University of Tennessee at Martin’s (UTM) radio station, WUTM, and won the award for their play-by-play from night 3 of the 2022 UTM college rodeo.

  • Rotary Hears About Habitat for Humanity

    McKENZIE (June 13) — Andrew Stokes, chairman of the Habitat for Humanity in Carroll County, was the featured speaker at the McKenzie Rotary Club on June 13. Stokes is a volunteer with the organization. He is also a Baptist minister, Boy Scout leader, and owns Stokes Surveying in Clarksburg.

  • Mayor Butler’s Golf Team Wins Chamber Tourney

    Team Butler was the champion of the 2023 Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament. The team had a score of 17 under par. The team was comprised of Joseph Butler, Brandon Kilburn, Blake Fawcett, and Evan Jarrett. The event was held at the Carroll Lake Golf Course in McKenzie.

  • Dresden’s Popeye Jones Wins First NBA Title

    When the Denver Nuggets won the NBA finals Monday, June 12, it was monumental. Stepping onto the court June 1, the Denver Nuggets had never played in the NBA finals before. Eleven days later, the team won their first ever NBA championship. It was monumental — not only for the city of Denver, but also for Dresden native Ronald “Popeye” Jones who served as the team’s assistant coach.

  • McKenzie Schools’ Enrollment Grew in 2022

    The Tennessee Comptroller’s Office released updated K-12 education information for the 2021-22 school year. The updated information includes data on teacher salaries, student enrollment, funding, graduation rates and ACT scores. New data indicates that the McKenzie Special School District’s enrollment is set to grow back to pre-COVID numbers in the coming years.

  • Trezevant Approves Budget

    TREZEVANT (June 13) — Trezevant Mayor and Council approved the 2023-24 fiscal year budget during the June 13 meeting. While the taxes at .65 per $100 assessed value did not increase, the town will experience a deficit budget in which expenses exceed revenues.

    ATWOOD — Beginning Wednesday, June 21, State Route 77/70A, Atwood to McLemoresville will be closed for the reconstruction of the roadway. The closure is expected to last six weeks, contingent on weather conditions.

    HUNTINGDON (June 13) — Members of the Huntingdon Special School District (HSSD) Board of Education met June 13 in an informal session to discuss the 2023-24 fiscal year budget. Dr. Jonathan Kee, director of schools, highlighted the proposed budget to be voted on Wednesday, June 21.

  • County Approves $30 Million Budget, Lauds McKenzie Championship Teams

    HUNTINGDON (June 12) — On Monday, the Carroll County Commission met at the Civic Center with a long agenda that included the approval of the $30 million 2023-24 Fiscal Year Budget. The budget for the general fund is $15,175,589 with an estimated revenue of $15,484,885 producing a positive net of $309,296 to be placed in reserves. According to Commissioner and Budget Chairman Darrell Ridgely, the budget was procured without raising taxes.

    During the regularly scheduled McKenzie Special School District Board meeting June 15, the school board voted unanimously to approve the 2023-24 budget, proposed by Dr. Justin Barden, McKenzie’s new director of schools, and Brad Davis, the new school finance director.

Proudly, there is a great number from our state but surprisingly there is only one player in the Hall of Fame. That one player is Norman “Turkey’’ Stearnes who played in the Negro Leagues. So with the help of Google and every sports index online, Turkey Stearnes is this week’s Weekly 150 spotlight.
