  • Spectator Unsportsmanlike Conduct Could Get School Fined, Sanctioned

    TENNESSEE (July 13) — The Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TSSAA) Council added language allowing the association to fine a school a minimum of $250 when it has a fan ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct during a contest. The new rule also includes the possibility of other non-monetary disciplinary action, including but not limited to probation and/or restrictive probation for the entire athletic program.

  • Middle School Football Jamboree is August 5

    McKENZIE — The 2023 middle school football season kicks off Saturday, August 5 with the McKenzie Middle School Football Jamboree at Randy Thomas Stadium. Beginning at 4 p.m., local middle school teams will compete using half of the football field, allowing for two games to play simultaneously. The games are broken into two 18-minute halves with hydration breaks.

    McKENZIE — As parents and students prepare for back-to-school shopping, it is important to know what students are allowed to wear in the classroom. McKenzie Middle School made minor updates to the dress code for the 2023-24 school year, allowing compression pants to be worn if the bottom is completely covered.

Administration made a few changes to the policy for the 2023-24 school year, adding more leniency to device usage while still protecting students from inappropriate use.

    TENNESSEE — Carroll, Henry and Weakley counties followed a national trend of increased unemployment rates in May 2023. Tennessee Labor Force Estimates report small percentage increases in the three counties and the United States, but Tennessee’s overall employment rate remained unchanged from April 2023.

    McKENZIE (July 11) — Williams Furniture celebrated an employee’s milestone retirement last Tuesday, July 11. Peggy Hopper announced her well-deserved retirement after a 42-year long career at Williams Furniture in McKenzie. Williams Furniture owner Phil Williams threw a Hawaiian-themed retirement party for Hopper on Tuesday afternoon, complete with tropical leis and a cake congratulating Hopper on her retirement.

    Clayhill Motorsports Park has new owners, and they’re returning racing to the famed Atwood track. In a press release, a spokesperson says the new racetrack (formerly known as the Atwood Speedway, then Clayhill, LLC.) returns with a new name, new owners, and a new purpose. The race track opens to the public for the first time in over two years on July 27 with a Thursday night “Test & Tune,” the first of many races under the new owners. August 5 is the first official race date.

    Children’s Christmas Bike Run July 29 It’s Christmas in July with the McKenzie VFW Post 4939 Children’s Christmas Bike Run on July 29. The run starts at VFW McKenzie, 9750 Cherrywood Rd., McKenzie and makes stops at Huntingdon Elks Lodge, Camden Elks Lodge, T-Bone’s, JW Brewskies, and back to VFW McKenzie. Registration is at 9 a.m. and costs $20 per person. Kickstands go up at noon. There will be prizes, raffles, and 50/50 raffles. All proceeds go to the Community Children’s Christmas.
