Bethel University Names Dr. Keith D. Herris as Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences

McKenzie, Tenn. — Bethel University announces the appointment of Dr. Keith D. Herris as Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, effective immediately. He has served as Interim Dean since May 5, 2025, and brings nearly two decades of dedication and leadership to this new role.

Selected following a national search that attracted a competitive pool of candidates from across the country, Dr. Herris stood out for his experience, institutional knowledge, and student-centered vision.

A member of the Bethel University faculty since 2006, he has served as chair of the Division of Music & Religion for 13 years. In addition to his administrative leadership, Dr. Herris is a professor of Music, teaching courses in piano performance, music theory, and piano pedagogy. Widely respected for his academic excellence, artistic contributions, and commitment to students, he has become a cornerstone of the University’s faculty.

“Dr. Herris exemplifies the mission and spirit of Bethel University,” said Interim Provost Dr. Joe Hames. “His proven leadership, long-standing dedication to academic quality, and unwavering commitment to students make him the ideal person to lead the College of Arts & Sciences into the future.”

President Perry Moulds emphasized the significance of his appointment at a pivotal time for the University. “The College of Arts & Sciences is central to how we help students grow intellectually, explore their calling, and prepare for meaningful lives after graduation,” Dr. Moulds said. “Dr. Herris brings a deep understanding of our mission and the experience to guide this important work.”

Dr. Herris earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from Michigan State University, where he studied with internationally renowned pianist Panayis Lyras. He also holds a Master of Music in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma, and a Bachelor of Arts in piano performance and pedagogy from Goshen College (IN). Dr. Herris notes that professors, Jane Magrath and Marvin Blickenstaff impacted his life and helped shape where he is today.

Outside the classroom, Dr. Herris is an accomplished pianist and chamber musician. He serves as the Principal Pianist for the Jackson Symphony and has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. His accolades include top prizes in numerous piano competitions across Indiana, Michigan, and Oklahoma.

As a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) through the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), Dr. Herris remains active in MTNA, Tennessee Music Teachers Association (TMTA), and Martin Area MTA. Through these associations, he has served as an adjudicator for auditions and competitions throughout west Tennessee and as a presenter for local music teachers.

“I am deeply honored to step into this role and continue serving the Bethel University community,” said Dr. Herris. “This University has been my professional and personal home for nearly 20 years, and I am committed to supporting our students, faculty, and programs as we move forward.”

In addition to his work at the University, Dr. Herris is a member of the McKenzie Rotary Club and serves as Music Director at the McKenzie First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He lives in McKenzie with his wife, Melissa, and their three daughters.
