CAMDEN (December 3) — McKenzie High School traveled to Camden Tuesday for a pair of basketball contests. The Lady Rebels trailed by four at the half, but took the lead in the third en route to a 47-42 victory. The Rebels had a two-point edge at the break, but the Lions rallied for a 60-52 win.

BRADFORD (November 23) — McKenzie traveled to Bradford High School Saturday evening for a pair of Hall of Champions (preseason) contests. The Lady Rebels were dominant in their first win of the year, 56-26. The Rebels, still short-handed while football continues, fell 70-35.

HUNTINGDON (December 5) — Huntingdon High School hosted Peabody Thursday for a pair of basketball contests. The Fillies rode a dominant first half to a 66-36 victory. The Mustangs led by six at the half, but the Golden Tide stormed back to claim an 81-60 win.

HUNTINGDON (November 15) — In the second round of TSSAA Football Playoff action, the Huntingdon Mustangs made short work of the defending 2A State Champion Riverside Panthers. After four quarters of play, the Mustangs advance to the third round with the 35-7 win.

McKENZIE (November 12) — McKenzie Middle School hosted Huntingdon Tuesday for a pair of basketball contests. The Fillies controlled the opener from the jump and ran away with a 58-12 win. The Rebels and Mustangs went back-and-forth in the nightcap, but McKenzie finished strong to claim a 33-28 victory.

NASHVILLE (November 7) — Semifinalists for the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Award were announced Thursday. McKenzie senior quarterback Tate Surber and Huntingdon senior quarterback Gray Eubanks were among the five semifinalists in their respective classifications.

HENDERSONVILLE (November 7-8) — The 2024 TSSAA State Cross Country Championships were last week at Sanders Ferry Park. McKenzie’s girls team, Huntingdon’s boys team and one individual Huntingdon girl qualified.

Huntingdon Moves to Round Two After Big Win Over Loretto

HUNTINGDON (November 8) — The Huntingdon Mustangs hosted the Loretto Mustangs in the opening round of the TSSAA Football Playoffs for Class 2A. In what started as a back-and-forth nail-biter, Huntingdon found its momentum and racked up a 63-28 victory. They advance to the second round to battle the Riverside Panthers.

It’s high school football playoff time in Tennessee, and several area teams are looking for deep runs and a trip to Chattanooga in early December. The journey begins Friday at 7 p.m. across the state.

McKENZIE (November 15) — McKenzie High School hosted Eagleville Friday for a second-round contest in the TSSAA Football Playoffs. The Eagles held the Rebels to a single first-half touchdown, but McKenzie’s defense was even more staunch from start to finish for a 28-0 shutout victory.

McKENZIE (November 15) — The Bethel Wildcats closed their season Saturday in Walter Butler Stadium playing host to the Faulkner Eagles. It was Senior Day for the Wildcats with ceremonies taking place before the kickoff. It was also Pepsi MidAmerica Day at the stadium.

McKENZIE (November 14) — McKenzie Middle School hosted Dresden Thursday for a pair of basketball contests. The Lady Rebels led for most of the game, but the Lady Lions rallied late for a 37-35 win. The Lions pulled away in the second half to defeat the Rebels, 48-31.

McKENZIE (November 2) — The Walter Butler Stadium was officially dedicated to the recently retired president of the local, private four-year university.

The new sign was erected last week to mark the location of a planned golf practice facility.

NASHVILLE (November 4) — The Tennessee Sports Writers Association announced football rankings after Week 11 on Monday, with the poll presented by CoachT.com. Top 10 teams in each of the six Division I classifications and Top 5 in three Division II classes were selected by TSWA members with first-place votes in parentheses and total points based on 10 points for a first-place vote through one point for a 10th-place vote.

Huntingdon Stems the Tide, Claims Region 6-2A Runner-Up

TRENTON (October 31) — Halloween night was extra scary for Region 6-2A teams battling for playoff position, but the Huntingdon Mustangs faced their fears head on and secured the runner-up position (and hosting rights to start the postseason) with a 38-21 win over the Peabody Golden Tide.

GLEASON (November 1) — Gleason School recognized two outstanding seniors, who have given their all for the Bulldog football program, and who participated in their final regular season football game at Parks Edwards Field. The seniors were presented with a commemorative plaque by Head Football Coach Noah Lampkins and Gleason School Principal Mr. Lee Lawrence.

PULASKI (October 25) — On Friday, the McKenzie Rebels made the two-and-half-hour trek to Pulaski, Tennessee to take on the 3A Giles County Bobcats. Despite a slow first quarter, the Rebels picked up their ninth win of the season with the 47-14 victory.

Huntingdon Routs Camden on Senior Night, 42-8

HUNTINGDON (October 25) — Huntingdon hosted Camden Friday for a region football contest. The Mustangs scored early and often to claim a 42-8 victory.

Mason Taylor led the War Eagles with 18 carries for 246 yards and five touchdowns.

West Carroll Soars into Memphis for 58-22 Win

MEMPHIS (October 24) — The West Carroll War Eagles traveled Thursday to face KIPP Memphis Collegiate High School for a non-region football contest at Crump Stadium. The War Eagles pulled away in the second quarter and coasted to a 58-22 victory over the Phoenix.

McKENZIE (October 21) — McKenzie Middle School hosted Bradford Monday for a pair of basketball contests. The Lady Red Devils pulled away in the second quarter to top the Lady Rebels, 42-15. The Rebels likewise made their mark in the second frame, outscoring the Red Devils 7-0 en route to a 38-15 victory.

DYER — Huntingdon picked up its sixth win of the season as the Mustangs whipped up on the Gibson County Pioneers. The Mustangs were able to post 44 unanswered points and produced a running clock early in the match-up.

ATWOOD (October 18) — West Carroll High School hosted Camden Friday for a non-region football contest. The visiting Lions dominated the first half, 41-0. The War Eagles played well in the second half, holding Camden scoreless but ultimately falling, 41-16.

Each year’s tradition to honor name a male and female senior to the honor during Homecoming during a pep rally celebrated on the steps of the Carroll County Courthouse.

McKENZIE (October 4) — McKenzie High School hosted Perry County Friday for a region football contest, the climax of a Homecoming week jam-packed with activities. The Rebels rode the Homecoming hype high into the game and put on a show for the large crowd, dominating the visiting Vikings 56-0.

PARSONS (October 4) — The Huntingdon Mustangs were able to bounce back after last week’s region loss to Milan. On Friday’s matchup, the Mustangs rallied from behind in the second half to defeat reigning state champions the Riverside Panthers, 35-21.

BROOKLAND, Texas — The Bethel University Wildcat team of Coleman Bingham and Brayden Wilson finished in third place recently in a Major League Fishing tournament held on Sam Rayburn Lake in Eastern Texas.

CAMDEN (October 1) - The McKenzie Middle School Rebels wrapped up the football season Tuesday with a gritty road win against Camden Junior High. The 14-6 victory leaves the Rebels undefeated with an 8-0 record.

GLEASON (September 26) — Addyson Black was crowned the 2024 football Homecoming Queen during pre-game ceremonies at Gleason High School. Miss Black is the daughter of Michelle and Brian Black. She is the manager of the football team, a member of the basketball and softball teams, and a member of the Beta Club, G-Club and Student Council.

SHARON (September 23) — The District 14A High School Golf tournaments were Monday at Persimmon Hills Golf Club. The McKenzie Lady Rebels were crowned champions among three competing teams, while the Rebels were runner-up out of eight teams.

GLEASON (September 26) — For a third straight game, Gleason’s football team was playing without the services of injured quarterback Drake Lehmkuhl. The Homecoming game was moved from the traditional Friday night to Thursday in anticipation of heavy rains on Friday as remnants of Hurricane Helene, that devastated the southeast with wind and rain.

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Sports Writers Association announced football rankings after Week 6 on Monday, with the poll presented by CoachT.com. Top 10 teams in each of the six Division I classifications and Top 5 in three Division II classes were selected by TSWA members with first-place votes in parentheses and total points based on 10 points for a first-place vote through one point for a 10th-place vote.

Mustangs Struggle in Dog, Pony Show

HUNTINGDON (September 26) — With pending storms compliments of Hurricane Helene, the 93rd meeting between the Huntingdon Mustangs and the Milan Bulldogs, was moved up to Thursday night. Despite the date change, the first half of action was mostly played in the rain. Milan, under the helm of former Rebel Head Coach Wade Comer, was able to move the ball with ease against Huntingdon taking the Region 6-2A win, 28-7.

Fillies Fall to Lady Chargers, 3-1

HUNTINGDON (September 24) - Huntingdon High School hosted Westview Tuesday for a consequential district soccer match. Each 2-0 in District 12A, the winner would claim the top seed in the upcoming tournament. The Fillies struck first at the very end of the first half, but the Lady Chargers scored three times in the second half to claim the 3-1 victory and the 3-0 district record.

Rebels Dominate Scotts Hill, 63-0

McKENZIE (September 20) — McKenzie High School hosted Class 3A Scotts Hill Friday. The Rebels didn’t afford the Lions even a semblance of momentum in the contest, scoring five times in the first quarter and stifling the Scotts Hill offense to -47 yards overall. McKenzie added four more touchdowns before the break and, after a mercifully short second half, claimed the 63-0 victory.

ALAMO (September 20) — The Huntingdon Mustangs made the trek to Alamo, Tennessee on Friday night as they battled the 4A Crockett County Cavaliers. Despite hot and muggy conditions, the Mustangs came away with the week five win, 28-21.

McKENZIE (September 17) — McKenzie Middle School hosted Huntingdon Tuesday for the final home football game of the season. The game was rescheduled from the previous week due to weather. The Rebels scored two early touchdowns and held the Mustangs to one score for a 16-6 victory.

ATWOOD (September 16) — West Carroll Junior High celebrated Homecoming Monday, delayed from the previous week due to weather. The War Eagles hosted Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Middle School and kept the Tigers at arm’s length for a 26-12 victory.

McKENZIE (September 13) — The McKenzie High School Rebels began region play Friday as they hosted the McEwen Warriors for another rainy affair at Randy Thomas Field. McEwen mustered an early touchdown for a 7-7 tie, but the Rebels ran away for a 49-7 victory.

HUNTINGDON (September 13) — On Friday night, the Huntingdon Mustangs picked up their second win of the season as they played host to the Columbia Academy Bulldogs. It was a game of pending rain showers with the perpetual lightning of yellow flags. The first quarter was a tight back-and-forth but like a diesel engine, the Mustang offense and defense heated up to roar away with the 42-20 win.

McKENZIE (September 6) — Mother Nature seemed to be the Rebels’ worst enemy Friday night, and a wet football may be the only thing that can slow down one of the most prolific passing offenses in the state. Fortunately, the arm of Tate Surber is just one of McKenzie’s many tools and the top-ranked Class 1A Rebels outlasted the rain and the Class 4A Chester County Eagles, 20-13.

McKENZIE (September 5) — In a battle of Rebels versus Rebels, the hometown red and gray was dominant on both sides of the ball against the visiting black and gold as McKenzie Middle School defeated Stewart County 40-8 behind a balanced offensive attack and smothering defense.

McKenzie Edges Huntingdon in Thriller, 38-35

HUNTINGDON (August 23) - Sometimes, you can believe the hype. A breathtakingly massive audience gathered at Paul Ward Stadium Friday to see the highly-anticipated season opener between the Mustangs and the visiting McKenzie Rebels, and the teams put on a show worthy of the storied rivalry. Huntingdon seemed to be in control with two early touchdowns, but McKenzie tied the game at 14-14 before halftime. After trading TDs in the third quarter, the Rebels took their first lead, 24-21, with a field goal to start a wild fourth quarter. Four more touchdowns meant four lead changes, and the Rebels took a final lead with just 22 seconds on the clock for a 38-35 victory.
