Early Turnovers Doom West Carroll in 39-0 Loss

ATWOOD (August 28) — Fayette-Ware capitalized on five first-half turnovers to build a commanding lead and defeat West Carroll 39-0 Friday at War Eagle Stadium.

The Wildcats converted each of West Carroll’s first-half fumbles into a touchdown, taking a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and carrying a 33-0 advantage into halftime.

West Carroll’s troubles began on the opening kickoff. Chris Pruitt returned the ball to the War Eagles’ 34-yard line but lost a fumble, giving Fayette-Ware possession at the West Carroll 35.

The War Eagle defense forced the Wildcats into a fourth-and-nine situation, but quarterback Justin Price connected with Layquan Armour for a 34-yard touchdown. The extra point gave Fayette-Ware a 7-0 lead.

West Carroll fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Fayette-Ware’s Jordan Turnage recovered at the War Eagle 41. Price quickly found Deangelo Kee for a 43-yard touchdown. A failed conversion attempt kept the score at 13-0.

The War Eagles began moving the ball on their next possession and reached Fayette-Ware territory before losing another fumble on third-and-one. Xavier McCulley recovered for the Wildcats, who converted the turnover into a 21-yard touchdown run by Armour. The extra point increased the lead to 20-0.

West Carroll’s defense produced a stop early in the second quarter. A Fayette-Ware touchdown was erased by an ineligible receiver penalty, and the Wildcats later turned the ball over on downs.

The War Eagles were unable to take advantage. Parker Newman lost a fumble near midfield, and Fayette-Ware’s Rontrevious Taylor recovered. Braylon Walker capped the resulting possession with a 17-yard touchdown, giving the Wildcats a 26-0 lead with 5:21 remaining in the half.

West Carroll again moved into Wildcats territory late in the quarter, but a fumble on a double reverse ended the drive. Exavier Jones recovered for Fayette-Ware with 18 seconds remaining.

Price then connected with Armour on a deep pass that placed the ball at the West Carroll 3. Armour scored on the next play, and the extra point sent Fayette-Ware into halftime leading 33-0.

The Wildcats added their final touchdown early in the third quarter. A 29-yard run by Price and a horse-collar penalty moved Fayette-Ware deep into West Carroll territory. Reynaldeus Raimey finished the possession with a 5-yard touchdown run. The conversion failed, leaving the score at 39-0.

Neither team scored during the remainder of the game.

West Carroll continued battling despite the deficit. Newman intercepted a Fayette-Ware pass late in the fourth quarter, and the War Eagles drove to the Wildcats’ 22 behind runs by Caleb Vermillion, Newman and Alexander Caviness. The game ended when Newman was sacked on the final play.

Vermillion led West Carroll with 43 yards on 11 carries. Caviness added 19 yards on eight attempts, while Newman rushed 12 times for 11 yards and completed four of five passes.

West Carroll fell to 0-2 and will travel to Dresden Friday for its first region game.
