Empathy in Action
Jackie Hughes Luffman’s Quest to Share the Good
From the May 14, 2024 e-Edition
At Henry County Medical Center [HCMC], they don’t just want to be the good in our community. There mission extends beyond the walls as they work to share the good with those around them.
For over 20 years, Jackie Hughes Luffman has called HCMC home and enjoys being the good to everyone she comes in contact with. Jackie currently works as a registered nurse in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab. During her time at HCMC, Jackie has spent time working in the emergency room, orthopedics, medical surgery, pediatrics, and served as the director of inpatient services. In her current role in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab, Jackie is the happiest and most fulfilled she’s ever been.
Working in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab is truly being part of a family. Everyone in the department works well together and plays a necessary part. Jackie thanks God every day for the wonderful HCMC community she gets to work with – pharmacists, housekeepers, nurses, doctors, CNAs – everyone works together to maintain the highest standards and provide top-notch care.
Most importantly, Jackie loves the patients she works with because, in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab, they become a family. She is blessed to see treatments make a difference in patients’ lives. Countless times, she has worked with patients who begin their time in a wheelchair and leave being able to walk on a treadmill. She knows the work she and her team are doing makes a lasting, positive impact in people’s lives and she is grateful for the opportunity to help others experience healing.
Outside of her work with patients, Jackie continues to share the good with her community and neighbors. Since the loss of her daughter in 2009, Jackie has been an active speaker at school and church youth events to warn about the dangers of distracted driving. She aims to empower teenagers to avoid texting and other distractions while driving. Jackie warns young drivers of the dangerous outcomes as well as inspires them to choose to drive without distractions so that no one else will have to experience this type of tragic loss.
Her mission doesn’t stop there. In addition to serving patients at HCMC and motivating teenage drivers, Jackie and her husband serve as volunteer firemen in Stewart County. They both also share their love for God and others through an active gospel bluegrass band. The band has performed at numerous churches, festivals, and the Kentucky Opry.
Jackie has an incredible heart for others and wants to reach as many people as she can. She works tirelessly to be the good in the community.
