McKenzie Splits With Henry County, Sweeps Houston County
From the Jan 25, 2022 e-EditionMcKenzie basketball played host to Henry County on Tuesday, January 18 and hit the road on Friday, January 21 to Houston County. They split both games.
Lady Rebels 72, Lady Patriots 58
The #1 ranked Lady Rebels continued their winning ways against the Lady Patriots although they got off to a slow start trailing 16-11 at the end of the first period. They took the lead in the second period with a 22-14 effort giving McKenzie a 34-30 halftime lead.
The Lady Rebels chalked up 21 points in the third period to take a 55-44 lead at the end of three periods. A 17-14 effort in the fourth period secured the double-digit win for McKenzie.
Savannah Davis led all scorers with 30 points on the night while Briley Auvenshine had 16 points. Dani Dyer added eight points while Katie Chesser had six points and Kylie Reynolds had four points. Hannah Dillingham had three points while Mikaela Reynolds and Madison Gilbert chipped in two points each for the Lady Rebels.
The Lady Patriots were led by Charly Hutson with 19 points while Harlee Veazey had 16 points and Mary Raye Smith had 12 points. Mary Kate Coley added nine points and Bayleigh Thompson chipped in two points for Henry County.
Patriots 56, Rebels 44
A bad first period and a slow third period doomed the Rebels against the Patriots. The Rebels managed only five points in the first period while giving up 13 points to the Patriots. They had a much better second period outscoring Henry County 18-14 to make it a closer 27-23 score by halftime.
The Patriots outscored the Rebels 15-8 in the third period putting them in a double-digit hole heading into the final period and couldn’t recover as McKenzie fell 56-44.
Tate Surber and Marquez Taylor led the Rebel scoring with 14 and 13 points respectively while Bryson Steele added 10 points. Zayden McCaslin and Bryant Haynes had three points each and Zay Webber chipped in a point for the Rebels.
The Patriots were led by Brice Donaldson with 20 points followed by Zay Phelps with 17 points and Caden Marshall with 11 points. Jackson Hayes added nine for the Patriots.
On Friday night, McKenzie traveled to Houston County for district action with the Lady Rebels winning 68-61 and the Rebels won 48-41.
