Mustangs are State-Bound with Sweep of Eagles

HUNTINGDON (May 14) — The Huntingdon Mustangs are headed to the TSSAA Class 2A Baseball State Championship after sweeping Summertown in the first two games of a best-of-three Sectional series Wednesday, 5-2 and 7-0.

The eight-team, double-elimination state tournament begins Tuesday, May 20 and culminates in the championship game Friday, May 23. The Mustangs first play Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against either Sweetwater or Pigeon Forge.

Game One: Huntingdon Mustangs 5, Summertown Eagles 2

Huntingdon scored two runs in each of the first two innings. Summertown got on the board with a run in the third, but the Mustangs added one in the fourth. The Eagles plated a run in the sixth.

Mustang Gray Eubanks was 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles, a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Braylon Rich went 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks, two RBIs and a run scored. Brady Warbritton was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Hayes Eubanks went 2-for-4. Braylin Dearmon was 1-for-3. Silas Sharp was 0-for-1 with two walks and an RBI.

Easton Byars earned the complete-game win for Huntingdon, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out four and walking none.

Game Two: Mustangs 7, Eagles 0

Huntingdon scored a run in the first, two in the third and four in the fifth for the shutout.

Mustang Braylin Dearmon was 1-for-1 with a home run, three walks, three RBIs and a run scored. Hayes Eubanks went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. Easton Byars was 1-for-1 with two walks and a run scored. Silas Sharp went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and two RBIs. Gray Eubanks was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored. Broox Bennett went 1-for-4 with a double. Braylon Rich was 1-for-4. Brady Warbritton went 0-for-3 with two walks, a run scored and a stolen base.

Caleb Ezell earned the complete-game shutout for Huntingdon, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out three.
