The Dixie Honors Dedicated Volunteers

HUNTINGDON (August 19) — The Dixie Carter Performing Arts Center recently hosted its annual volunteer usher luncheon, a celebration dedicated to the individuals who serve as the face of the organization. The event provided an opportunity for leadership to express gratitude for the thousands of hours contributed by volunteers over the past year.

Dr. Krista Martin, board president of the Friends of the Dixie, opened the program by acknowledging the volunteers' grace and dedication during a year of growth and change. During the luncheon, the Friends of the Dixie unveiled a new painting by local Jackson artist Lyndon Noe. The artwork, which will be displayed in the theater, serves as a tribute to the venue’s namesake, Dixie Carter.

Kimberly McLemore, executive director of The Dixie Carter Performing Arts Center, emphasized that the volunteers are the heartbeat of the venue. "You help set the tone for the entire experience," McLemore noted, praising their kindness, patience, and flexibility. She shared impressive statistics from the past twelve months: 66 volunteers contributed a combined 2,370 hours, serving 9,282 patrons and assisting 4,400 students across 36 schools.

The event recognized top contributors, including Jeff Masek (79 hours) and Allison Cummings and Denise Penticott, who tied with 81 hours each. Service milestones were celebrated, ranging from first-year volunteers to three individuals marking 20 years of service: Nancy Blaylock, Barbara Clifton, and Brooke Hodges. Special awards were also presented, including the Brooke S. Hodges Award for excellence in patron experience and the Carter Holbrook Award for leadership.

The Carter-Holbrook Award — For Excellence In Organizational Volunteer Leadership of the Arts was presented to Dennis Blackwell. The award was presented by Kimberly McLemore.

The Mayor's Award — For Good Humor and Patience in the Public Service of the Arts was presented to Sherrye Hudson. The award was presented by Mayor Chad Edwards.

The Brooke S. Hodges Award - For Excellence in Providing a Positive Patron Experience was presented to Lavonne Mazik. The award was presented by Brooke Hodges.

The luncheon also served as a time of reflection, honoring the memories of three dedicated volunteers who died in the last year: Carol Pinson, Bob Epsey, and Ruby Allen. Their families were present to receive certificates in recognition of their years of service and commitment to the community.
