DYER (September 26) — One rule of football is that if you keep the ball away from a team’s offense, you improve your chances of winning. That rule didn’t play out in the Huntingdon Mustangs’ 44-6 win over Gibson County in Dyer, as the Mustangs were efficient with their offense, as they ran nine offensive plays and scored 35 points on those nine plays. The Mustangs also scored on a punt return and recorded a safety in the win.

All the Mustang’s points came in the first half as the second half was six-minute quarters with a running clock, and the Mustangs never ran an offensive play in the second half. The Mustangs had their second lowest offensive output of the year as they ran for 123 yards and passed for 104. The Mustang defense posted their lowest numbers of the year as they held the Pioneers to 23 yards on the ground and 52 passing yards.

Huntingdon scored on its opening drive in three plays that covered 54 yards, and the TD came on a two-yard run by Hayes Eubanks. Greyson Anderson tacked on the point after for a 7-0 lead.

The Mustangs then recovered a Pioneer fumble at the Gibson County 19, and Kenton Smith scampered the distance to the end zone in one play. Anderson’s PAT gave the Mustangs a 14-0 lead.

Huntingdon then took over on their next possession after a Pioneer punt at midfield and scored in two plays. Garvin Kee caught a 34-yard pass from Smith for a touchdown, and Anderson was good again on the point after. The lead grew to 21-0.

The Mustangs fielded a short punt and started at the Pioneer 40, and threw two passes, with the first to Colt Wood for 25 yards, and then 15 yards to Tyreke Hutch for the touchdown. Ethan Raffield kicked the point after, and the score stood at 28-0.

K’Shun Carter then fielded a Pioneer punt at the Gibson County 42 and sprinted down the sideline to the end zone for the score. Raffield booted the point after through and the Mustangs led 35-0 as the first quarter was coming to a close.

The Pioneers punted again on their next possession. The punt traveled eight yards, and the Mustangs took over at the 50. Wood found a seam in the middle of the defense and ran to the end zone for a touchdown. Raffield tacked on the point after, and the Mustangs led 42-0.

The Mustangs’ final two points of the night came when Gibson County snapped the ball over the punter’s head and went out of the end zone for a safety as Huntingdon upped its lead to 44-0.

The Pioneers had the ball for the final 12 minutes of the game and scored on a 10-yard run by Isaiah Rice for the final margin.

The Mustangs play Riverside at home this Friday for the first of four home games to finish the season. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
