With the 2022-23 school year fast approaching, several local athletes have been getting mentions as top West Tennessee athletes headed into the new school year.

Marquez Taylor, Sr. RB, McKenzie Rebels — Marquez had an outstanding junior season rushing for 1,676 yards on 193 carries scoring 33 touchdowns. He also caught 24 passes for 411 yards and six more touchdowns. He was a Class 1A Mr. Football finalist last season and is currently ranked as the #21 athlete in Tennessee and #52 athlete in the country for 2023. Marquez also has several scholarship offers and likely will receive more during his senior season.

Jackson Cassidy, Sr. QB/DB, McKenzie Rebels — Jackson came into his own last season on both sides of the ball. He was the starting quarterback for McKenzie and played like it completing 56 percent of his passes for 1,816 yards, 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He also rushed for 883 yards and 14 more touchdowns. On defense, he racked up 115 tackles as a defensive back.

Savannah Davis, Jr. F, McKenzie Lady Rebels Basketball — As a mere sophomore, she played like an upperclassman averaging 17.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game leading McKenzie to the Class A State Title. The majority of the team including Davis will be returning this year to defend that title.

Tate Surber, So. Baseball, McKenzie Rebels — Tate was an All-West Tennessee Baseball pick as a freshman batting .406 with 28 hits, 26 RBI’s, nine doubles, two triples, and one homer along with 23 runs scored and 12 stolen bases for the Class 1A Baseball Runner-Ups.

Delaney Byars, So. Softball, Huntingdon Fillies — Delaney was a force on the Fillie Softball team hitting .407 with three doubles and a triple scoring 33 runs and driving in 16 RBI’s helping the Fillies get to the Class 2A Sectionals.

Gray Eubanks So. QB, Huntingdon Mustangs — Gray led the Mustangs to a 9-3 record as a freshman quarterback helping them reach the Class 2A Football Playoffs. One of the wins included snapping Trenton Peabody’s 44-game win streak. Gray rushed for 337 yards and six touchdowns while throwing for 247 yards and five touchdowns with five interceptions.
