SPRING CITY, Tenn. — The Bethel University Fishing team competed this past Saturday on Watts Bar Lake near Spring City, Tennessee and walked away with the 2023 Tennessee BASS Nation Governor’s Cup State College Championship Trophy.

Arrowhead Resort hosted the event on Watts Bar Lake in eastern Tennessee.

Teams from eight different schools in Tennessee were represented including the Wildcats.

After a day of rain and cool temperatures, the Cats came out on top with the win.

The Governor’s Cup is based on the top three best boats’ weights from each school combined for a cumulative score.

Bethel’s top three boats included Chase Milholen and teammate Kolton Harbin with a weight of 14.92 pounds to lead Bethel. Niko Romero and teammate Coleman Bingham had a total weight of 14.71 and Levi Mullins and Matt Cummins also had a weight of 14.71 to vault the Wildcats to victory. All three Bethel teams had five fish limits of bass.

Honorable mention goes to Colby Carrier of Bethel for big bass of the tournament with a largemouth bass that weighed in at 6.67 pounds.

The Wildcats had just competed a week prior on Cherokee Lake near Jefferson City, Tennessee in the Bassmasters regional where Bethel saw Hunter Fillmore and Dylan Fogarty finish in sixth place out of 274 boats. This finish qualified the duo to compete in the upcoming Bassmasters College Nationals in August of this year.

“A huge shout out to all our guys who competed for a great job and a great win,” said Coach Garry Mason. “These guys just never give up no matter what the conditions. We are very proud of them all,” said Mason.

The Bassmasters regional will be the next stop for the Bethel Wildcats squad and will be held in Richmond, Virginia on the James River April 17 through 22.
