Several local events will commemorate Memorial Day 2023 on Monday, May 29.

City of McKenzie
McKenzie is hosting its annual Memorial Day event in the downtown Veterans Park, 10 a.m.

The speaker is Madelyn Morris, former VFW Patriot Pen winner. The prayer will be offered by Dana Deem, Master Sergeant USAF-Retired and Wayne and Trudi Bannister will provide the music.

Town of Huntingdon
The Town of Huntingdon is hosting the 20th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Monday at Thomas Park on East Main Street in Huntingdon. We will be remembering those who died in military service to our country, as well as veterans and active military personnel. There will be reserved seating for veterans and a red carnation for every Veteran who registers at the table prior to the ceremony. Registration for veterans begins at 9:15 a.m.

Retired Air Force Colonel James C. Harding of Huntingdon is the featured speaker. Bring your lawn chairs and join us in this annual event. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held at the Huntingdon Middle School Gymnasium. For questions or additional information about the ceremony, contact Huntingdon City Hall at 731-986-2900.

Fish Fry

Huntingdon American Legion Post 47 is hosting a Fish Fry “Plate Meal” on Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m. at Cash Saver Supermarket Parking Lot, 20150 East Main Street, Huntingdon. The cost is $15.

McKenzie VFW Post 4939
The Trailblazers Band on May 26, 7 to 11 p.m. There is a $5 admission fee. Hamburgers and cheeseburgers made to order are $10. Drinks bear an extra cost.

Liberty All United Methodist
The annual Memorial Day Program at Liberty All United Methodist Church, 2415 Old Stage Road, Huntingdon, is at 10:45, May 28.

Thomas Raines, a UT Martin graduate and a veteran of the U. S. Army, is the guest speaker. Mr. Raines served in the U. S. Army from 1967-1971. One of those years of service was in Vietnam where he was a member of the 4th Engineers, 4th Infantry Division and the 20th Engineer Brigade. After he was honorably discharged, he returned to Humboldt, Tenn., his hometown, where he had a 40-year teaching career in the Humboldt School System.

He served as an agriculture instructor and vocational principal. He and Frances have been married for 55 years and they have two grown children, Cindi Raines Swaim and John Raines.

The veterans in attendance will be recognized, then the names of the 75 veterans buried in Liberty All Cemetery will be read. The congregation will then go outside and place flags on each of the 75 graves.

The program will conclude by the playing of “Taps.”
