Fighting Irish Take Late Lead Over Lady Rebels

The Houston County Fighting Irish defeated the McKenzie Lady Rebels 7-5 after stealing the lead in the seventh inning.

The Lady Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Katie Chesser singled up the middle, then stole second and third base. Kassidy Brown reached on an error by the right fielder, and Chesser scored on the same error.

The Lady Rebels led 1-0 until the top of the third inning after two RBI by Houston County gave them a 2-1 lead. Ally Mitchell walked down the line after taking one for the team. Peyton Brooks singled up the middle. Haylie Brooks grounded out to Katie Chesser at shortstop but scored Mitchell. Chailey Clark singled to left field to score Peyton Brooks. The Fighting Irish took a one-run lead.

The teams were scoreless through the fourth inning. Houston County added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Haylie Brooks singled to right center and advanced on an error by the center fielder. Clark singled up the middle to score Brooks. The Irish held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Rebels answered back with one run in the fifth. Briley Auvenshine walked down the chalk to first base. On a passed ball and a wild pitch she advanced to third base. Kassidy Brown grounded out to second base, but Auvenshine crossed home plate to score a run. The Lady Rebels trailed 3-2 going into the sixth inning.

The Irish increased their lead in the top of the inning. Kylie Smith singled to left field and advanced to third base on an error by the left fielder. Kennedy Jones hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Smith.

The Lady Rebels rallied in the sixth to score three runs and take a one-run lead. Aubrey Jackson singled up the middle. Addie Freeman singled to center field to score Jackson. Freeman advanced to second base on the throw home. Katie Chesser doubled to clear the bases. Briley Auvenshine stepped into the batter’s box. Chesser stole third base during the at-bat, then crossed the plate when Auvenshine hit a single to right field. The Lady Rebels led the Irish 5-4 going into the final inning.

The Irish tied the game quickly and then stole the lead right out from under the Lady Rebels. Ally Mitchell hit a solo homerun over the left field fence to tie the game at 5. The Lady Rebels had two putouts at the plate, but couldn’t hold off Houston County. Clark signed to left field, then reached third on a wild pitch. Smith walked down the line to first base after taking four pitches. Smith stole second base. Kennedy Jones singled to left field to score Clark and Smith and hoist Houston County to a 7-5 lead.

The Lady Rebels were held hitless in the final inning by the Irish. Houston County topped McKenzie 7-5.
