Henry County Slides Past McKenzie

McKENZIE — The Henry County Lady Patriots defeated the McKenzie Lady Rebels 9-3 Thursday evening. The Lady Patriots scored four runs in the third inning to boost their lead and secure their victory.

The Lady Patriots Noe Wilkerson, Celia Lamkin and Breely Peirpoint filled up the bases. Wilkerson was hit in by Emma Thompson. Lamkin was tagged out on the base path by Briely Auvenshine for the second out. Katie Chesser threw across the diamond to Haylee Beard for the third out to retire the top of the first inning.

Briley Auvenshine had the only hit for the Lady Rebels during the first inning. Auvenshine singled to the left side but was left on base. The Lady Rebels trailed the Lady Patriots 1-0.

McKenzie held Henry County scoreless in the top of the second. Chesser caught a fly ball in short left field for the first out. Auvenshine caught a quick line drive at third base for the second out. Chesser found Beard’s glove at first base for the third out.

The Lady Rebels could not adjust on the offensive side of the ball and were sat down in order with three strikeouts in the second inning.

The Lady Patriots almost went through their entire lineup during the third inning and added four runs to the board. Wilkerson and Lamkin had a single each and sat on first and third base. Peirpoint hit into a fielder’s choice play where Wilkerson was tagged out by Kassidy Brown at the plate. Thompson singled to right field to score Lamkin. Serenity Crosser doubled to left field to score Peirpoint and Thompson. Layne Latimer singled up the middle to score Crosseer. The Lady Patriots led 5-0 in the middle of the third inning.

The Lady Rebels were put away in order with one strikeout and two putouts. The Lady Rebels fell behind the Lady Patriots 5-0 going into the fourth inning.

The Lady Patriots added two more runs to their side of the board during the fourth inning. Alley Fench and Audrey Hill singled to put them on base. French and Hill crossed home plate when Thompson singled up the middle. Henry County held a seven-run lead going into the bottom of the fourth.

The Lady Rebels put up their first runs during the fourth inning. Savannah Davis took a hit for the team and walked down the chalk to first base. Auvenshine doubled to left field to score Davis. Payton Ognibene put a sacrifice bunt down to score Auvenshine. McKenzie trailed 7-2 at the end of the fourth inning.

The Lady Rebels put the Lady Patriots away scoreless in the fifth inning. Chesser threw across the diamond to Ognibene for the first out. Carli Beeler made a stop at second base for a throw to first base for the second out. Briley Auvenshine threw a strikeout for the final out.

The Lady Rebels struggled at the dish during the fifth inning and were sat down with two strikeouts and a put out by the pitcher.

Henry County added two more runs to the board during the sixth inning. Hill and Wilkerson walked down the line after getting hit by a pitch. Peirpoint doubled to the right side to score both Hill and Wilkerson. Peirpoint was left on base.

The Lady Rebels trailed 9-2 going into the bottom of the sixth. Chesser doubled to the right side, but was left stranded on second base.

The Lady Patriots were scoreless in the seventh. Chesser made a play at shortstop and a throw across the field to Ognibene at first base for the first out. Davis caught a fly ball in center field for the second out. Auvenshine struck out the final Lady Patriot to put the Lady Rebels on the offensive side of the ball.

Kassidy Brown singled to right field. Katlynn Hoffman took Brown’s spot at first base as a courtesy runner. Haylee Beard walked down the baseline to first base after watching four balls. Beeler doubled to left field to score Hoffman. The Lady Rebels had two infield flies to end the game. The Lady Patriots topped the Lady Rebels 9-3.

Payton Ognibene pitched four innings. Briley Auvenshine pitched the final three innings with three strikeouts and only one hit.

Celia Lamkin toed the rubber for the Lady Patriots and had a total of ten strikeouts and 78 strikes.

The Lady Rebels are set to host the McEwen Lady Warriors on Thursday, April 6. First pitch is 5 p.m. at McKenzie City Park.
