McKenzie Lady Rebels, the Class 1A defending state champions lost two contests to Gibson County and Huntingdon, both Class 2A teams during the week. The Lady Rebels are suffering from a spate of injuries that have sidelined Savannah Davis, the Class 1A Miss Basketball, Madison Gilbert and Hannah Dillingham - all of whom played on the championship team last season.
McKenzie (December 13) — McKenzie Lady Rebels lost 71 to 76 to Gibson County Lady Pioneers. It was coaches Wilkins against Wilkins with Gibson County being coached by Mitch Wilkins and McKenzie being coached by John Wilkins, Mitch’s son.
In the contest, McKenzie scored 26, 17, 20, and 8 in the respective quarters. Mikaela Reynolds was high scorer with 19 points, Sophie Pate had 15, Kylie Reynolds had 12, Briley Auvenshine had 12, Katie Chesser had 9, and Ally Gibson and Sarah Luci each had 2. The team made 5 foul shots, 100 percent of the attempts.
Gibson County scored 22, 16, 19, and 19 in the respective quarters. Evyn Cantrell had 22 points, Saniah Reaves had 18, Micah Hart had 15, Georgia Lannon had 14, Libby Goad with 3, Akira Riding and Maya Turner with two each. The team made 20 of 26 foul shots.
Huntingdon (December 16) — McKenzie Lady Rebels were defeated by the Huntingdon Fillies, who had a good night on the boards. The final score was 86-59. It was a contest featuring coaches Wilkins against Wilkins, this time, brothers in the same county on different teams. John Wilkins coaches McKenzie’s girls and boys. David Wilkins coaches the Fillies. Huntingdon and McKenzie are split on the season. The Lady Rebels won 82-58 when they played in November in McKenzie.
McKenzie scored 12, 13, 24, and 10 in the respective quarters. Briley Auvenshine was the high scorer with 18, Mikaela Reynolds had 14, Kylie Reynolds, 12, Katie Chesser, 9, and Sophie Pate, 6.
The Lady Rebels were 50 percent on foul shots.
Huntingdon’s Fillies scored 20, 16, 27, and 23 in the respective quarters. They were led by Lilly Kee with 31, followed by Sophie Singleton with 20, Delanie Byars with 11, Lia Fuller with 8, Annabele Singleton with 7, Sara Beth Smith with 6, and Josey Stokes with 3. The team shot 15 of 21 foul shots for 71 percent.
Rebels Win 2 in Week
McKenzie Rebels, Class 1A, won against Gibson County and Huntingdon, both Class 2A teams during the week. The Rebels defeated the Pioneers 76-71 in a home contest and defeated Huntingdon Mustangs 71-53 at Huntingdon.
McKENZIE (December 13) — McKenzie Rebels claimed their second victory of the season, after a delay in the start of the 2022-23 campaign due to an extended football season, taking out many of the basketball players.
McKenzie scored 73 with 22, 17, 15, and 19 points in the respective quarters. Marquez Taylor led the scoring with 18, followed by Tate Surber with 16, Zach Aird with 11, Zay Webber with 10, Bryson Steele with 10, and Stafford Roditis with 8.
Gibson County Pioneers scored 68 points with 19, 19, 11, and 19 in the respective quarters. The team was led by Kylan Finch with 23, Matthew Reynolds with 20, Ethan Turner with 13, Cole Lannom with 7, Sedric Leke with 4, and Carter Crandall with 1.
HUNTINGDON (December 16) — It was a tale of two halves with the contest between the McKenzie Rebels and Huntingdon Mustangs tied at 29 at half. Forty-two points in the second half gave the Rebels the necessary points to claim victory.
The Rebels scored 71 points with 23, 6, 20, and 22 in the respective quarters. The team was led by Bryson Steele with 26, Marquez Taylor with 16, Tate Surber with 10, Stafford Roditis with 10, Carter Kee with 7, and Zay Webber with 2. The team missed all three free throws.
Huntingdon scored 53 points, with 10, 19, 15, and 9 in the respective quarters. The team was led by Kaleb Pearson with 14, Ty Kelley with 13, EJ Lewis with 13, Caleb Ezell with 6, Landon Gordon with 5, and Jordan Willis with 2. The team hit 2 of 11 free throws for 18 percent.
