The April meeting of the McKenzie Garden Club was April 22 at the home of Chester and Victoria Ard, with President Myra Sasser presiding. The Devotional was given by Victoria, who spoke on the importance of recognizing and appreciating the tiny blessings in our lives. The big blessings are wonderful, but it’s the tiny ones - phone calls from our children, hugs from loved ones, cool breezes, first tomatoes on the vines, funny family stories - that really get us through the rough times in our lives.

HUNTINGDON (April 26) — The $10 annual wheel tax on each motorized vehicle registered in Carroll County should end on December 31. That’s if the Carroll County 1000-Acre Lake is purchased by the State of Tennessee, said Carroll County Mayor Joseph Butler.

McKENZIE (May 1) — McKenzie Lady Rebels and Rebels 2021-22 basketball teams were feted to a banquet and honored for their unprecedented successes. Never in the history of McKenzie athletes have two teams earned state berths in the same year. Including the 2021 McKenzie Rebel football team and golf teams, it was the third and fourth team to earn state berths in the same school year.

ATWOOD — West Carroll’s War Eagle Baseball celebrated Senior Day on Thursday evening, April 28, introducing their three senior players. The seniors were Jason Langston (22), Briggs Easley (8), and Hunter Lindsey (33) and were escorted by their parents. They also introduced the eighth grade players coming into the program next year and their parents.

With the onset of the Civil War and Tennessee’s secession, a group of pro-Union leaders in East Tennessee, which had rejected secession, petitioned Harris to allow the region to break away from the state and remain with the Union. Harris rejected this and sent troops under Felix K. Zollicoffer into East Tennessee. In the gubernatorial election later that year, William H. Polk, brother of former President James K. Polk, ran against Harris on a pro-Union ticket but was defeated 75,300 to 43,495.

Several local players were named to the Tennessee Sportswriters Association All-State Girls Team recently. State Champion McKenzie had one named to the TSWA team in Sophomore Savannah Davis, who was also named Miss Basketball in Class A. Nearby Gleason had two seniors named to the TSWA All-State Team with Alana Anderson and Carrington Lifsey. Anderson was a Class A Miss Basketball Finalist. Lucy Curry, a junior from Dresden was named to the TSWA team.

Trespassing, Animal Cruelty — Shauna Maria Foster, 44, of 82 Highway 79 Lane, Atwood, was charged with aggravated criminal trespassing and cruelty to an animal following an April 27 incident at an Atwood residence.

Traffic Charges — Sgt. Kyle Beauchamp made a traffic stop shortly after noon on Thursday, April 21, after observing a tail light out on a vehicle initiating the stop on Hwy 79. The driver was identified as Carrie Amber Shoebroek, 36, of Pineville, Louisiana. A license check revealed it was currently suspended in Louisiana and, she was unable to provide proof of insurance.
