McKenzie Earn Spot at State Semifinals

The McKenzie Rebels started off Wednesday with a 6-5 loss to the East Robertson Indians, but they battled back in the losers bracket and defeated the Bradford Red Devils 13-1 to secure their stop in the Class 1A State Semifinals.

The Rebels started their long day off facing the East Robertson Indians. The Indians had a four run advantage going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Rebels scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, but that wasn’t enough to hold off the Indians.

The teams were scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth. Tate Surber crossed the plate on a wild pitch to put the Rebels ahead 1-0.

The Rebels lead was short lived. With two runners on, Miller Cothron hit a 3-run home run over the left field fence to steal the lead. The Indians led 3-1 throughout the fifth inning.

The Indians increased their lead during the sixth. Gavin True doubled to left field, then scored off of a Rebel error. East Robertson led 4-1.

The Rebels were able to put another run on the board during the bottom of the sixth. Braden Birmingham doubled to left field. Lane Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Birmingham. The Rebels trailed 4-2 going into the final inning.

The Indians added two more runs to the board during the seventh. Wyatt Pearson hit a moon shot over the left field fence to score Cothron and himself. The Indians led 6-2 as the top of the inning came to a close.

The Rebels scored three runs in the final inning. Jake Cassidy had an RBI. Braden Birmingham and Nolan Renfro both singled to the outfield to score two runs. The Indians seal their victory with an infield fly out. The Rebels fell to the losers bracket and faced the Bradford Red Devils directly after.

The Red Devils started off with the lead after Cason Sharp hit a solo home run over the left field fence. That lead was short lived when the Rebels stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the second. McKenzie scored six runs off of five hits during the inning. Lane Anderson singled up the middle to score Birmingham and Renfro. Jackson Cassidy singled to left field to score Anderson. With two runners on base, Hixson stepped into the box. Hixson knocked the ball over the left field fence for a three run home run. The Rebels led the Red Devils 6-1 at the end of the second inning.

The Red Devils were held scoreless by the Rebels throughout the game.

McKenzie added to their lead in the third inning. Lane Anderson doubled to right field to score Jake Cassidy. The Rebels increased their lead to 7-1.

The Rebels had another six runs cross the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Hixson and Ty Anderson stood on base as Tate Surber doubled to left field to score both runs. Jake Cassidy singled to the outfield to score Surber and give the Rebels a 10-1 lead. Jake Cassidy scored on a wild pitch to bring the Rebels ahead by ten runs. Lane Anderson doubled to right field to score Birmingham. Renfro crossed the plate last to make the score 13-1.

The Indians were put down in order to end the game.
