Micah McCarty Earns Doctor of Optometry Degree

MEMPHIS (July 5) — Micah Bullock McCarty, O.D., of Huntingdon, was among 134 students recently awarded the Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis.

McCarty graduated Cum Laude and as a member of Beta Sigma Kappa, an honorary scholastic fraternity recognizing students with exceptional academic achievement. She also earned the Spivey Family Endowed Award, which comes with a $1,000 monetary award. The award, established by A.L. Spivey of Spivey Eye Clinic in McKenzie, honors a student who will pursue a career in rural private practice in Tennessee.

Attending optometry school during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Micah experienced changes in the school’s courses and training. Classes paused for a short time, but she and her classmates made up for lost time with online course work. The college also rearranged patient loads for students to accommodate to COVID-19 regulations.

Following her graduation in May, Micah began a thirteen-month residency at Hughes Eye Group in Jackson, Tenn. Hughes Eye Group provides medical and surgical eye care. During her residency, Micah receives additional training in examinations and evaluations including dilated eye exams, cataract evaluations, and diabetic eye exams.

By June 2023, Micah will begin at Hughes Eye Group’s Huntingdon clinic, located inside Baptist Memorial Hospital - Carroll County on 631 R.B. Wilson Drive.

A native of Huntingdon, Micah is the daughter of Katherine and Brent Bullock. She married Taylor McCarty, also of Huntingdon, in May 2021. Micah is the granddaughter of Bonnie and the late Don Bullock and Lois and the late Fred Ward. McCarty is a 2014 graduate of Huntingdon High School and a 2018 graduate of Union University, where she received a bachelors degree in Cell and Molecular Biology.

Optometrists are independent, primary health care providers who specialize in the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases/disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures, as well as the diagnosis of related systemic conditions.
