Posted
ATWOOD — McKenzie Middle’s Rebels traveled to Atwood on Thursday, September 1 for a game against the unbeaten War Eagles. It didn’t take long for either team to score with both teams finding the end zone early in the first quarter for a 6-6 tie halfway through the quarter. West Carroll scored first on a five-play drive for a touchdown. The 2-pt conversion was no good for a 6-0 War Eagle lead. McKenzie answered with a short drive for a score. A 51-yard pass and catch from Cole Brown to Jacobi Melton set up the Rebel’s first score. Matteo Campbell scored from 1-yard out with the 2-point conversion no good to tie the game 6-6.

The Rebels found pay dirt again with 2:25 left in the opening quarter on a 55-yard TD run by Melton with the 2-point conversion good for a 14-6 lead. After sacking the West Carroll quarterback for losses on third and fourth down, the ball went over on downs back to the Rebels at the West Carroll 23-yard line. Two plays later, Cole Brown took it in for a touchdown with the 2-point conversion attempt no good increasing the Rebel lead to 20-6 near the end of the first quarter.

West Carroll began the second quarter with possession at midfield and lost yards on a sack and a penalty leaving the War Eagles with a 4th and 29 situation. They threw an incomplete pass and McKenzie got possession on downs. They didn’t keep possession long with West Carroll recovering a fumble and then giving it right back to the Rebels on an interception by Jacobi Melton who took it to the War Eagle 5-yard line. One play later Melton ran it in the end zone for a Rebel touchdown with four minutes left in the first half. The two-point conversion attempt was no good leaving McKenzie with a 26-6 lead.

McKenzie got another interception on West Carroll’s next possession by Matteo Campbell at the Rebel 10-yard line. Cole Brown hit Avery Brown on second down with a 58-yard pass putting the Rebels in War Eagle Territory. The next play went the final 38 yards with Brown hitting Jacobi Melton on a swing pass. Brown ran in the two-point conversion for a 34-6 lead which was the halftime score.

The War Eagles started the second half with an onside kick that they recovered giving them field position in McKenzie territory. Neither team scored in the third quarter and headed into the fourth quarter with the Rebels leading 34-6. The Rebels had one last score on a drive capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by Cooper Davidson. Davidson also ran for a two-point conversion increasing the Rebels lead to 42-6 which ended up as the final score.

Both McKenzie and West Carroll will be in action on Thursday, September 8 with McKenzie hosting Henderson County North and West Carroll hosting Henderson County South.
