Innovative Paving is in Progress Along US79 North

Posted
HENRY COUNTY — An innovative asphalt grinding and paving operation is in progress between McKenzie and Paris on U.S. 79 (S.R. 76).  In one operation, Dustrol, Inc. of Kansas removes the top layer of asphalt, conditions it and reapplies it.

An operation known as Hot-In-Place recycling is an alternative in roadway repair programs. It saves time and money by completing the operation in a single pass.

The highly-efficient equipment and improved methods of pavement rehabilitation helps complete the project efficiently so traffic delays last only a few hours. The process is fast at 20 to 40 feet per minute, allowing the company to repair 2- to 4-lane miles per day, presenting far less inconvenience to motorists than traditional asphalt repair methods.

The company is working on one lane at a time. It grinds up the top layer, piles the asphalt in the center of the lane, the removed asphalt is heated by overpassing ovens pulled by several, driver-less semi-trucks, and then the hot asphalt is reapplied to the lane, completing the process.

All existing asphalt is reapplied and there is nothing to haul away. The process removes cracks, ruts, and low areas in the roadway.

Dustrol is a subcontractor of Delta. The cost is $7.9 million with an estimated completion date of November 30, 2022.
