UNION CITY   - Mr. Baxter Enloe Wheatley, 88, of Union City, died on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at the Legacy Of North Myrtle Beach in Little River, South Carolina.  

Services for Mr. Wheatley are 3 p.m. Sunday, May 14, 2023, at the First Methodist Church in Union City with Rev. Dan Tilly officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McKenzie on Sunday late afternoon.

Visitation is Sunday at the First Methodist Church in Union City from 2 p.m. until the hour of service at 4 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Mike Wheatley, Lynn Brinkley, Marty Tapper, Dennis Spears, Kevin Wheatley, Jeff Barksdale, Adam Wheatley, Nathan Wheatley, Greg Wilson, Sid Carey and John Archer.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Character Builders Sunday School Class and Union City School System members.

Mr. Wheatley was born April 22, 1935, in Big Sandy, Tennessee to the late Martha (Potts) and Reverend Joe Wheatley.  He married Carlyne Brinkley on April 25, 1958.  She died December 19, 2018.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Bethel College, had a Master's Degree from Murray State University. He served four years as principal at Hazel Elementary School, one year as principal of McKenzie (Tenn.) Elementary School, and one year as principal of McKenzie High School. He served eight years as superintendent of McKenzie Special School District and retired as superintendent of Union City Schools after 20 years.

He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Union City where he was a member of the Character Builders Sunday School Class.  Mr. Wheatley was a Union City Rotary Club member and Paul Harris Fellow recipient.  He also was a member of the Tennessee School Board Association.

Mr. Wheatley is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carol (David) Martin of Sunset Beach, N.C., one son and daughter-in-law, Stan (Dena) Wheatley of Mebane North Carolina, one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Hailey (Graham) Galloway of Canton, North Carolina and one brother, Bill Wheatley of Jackson, Tennessee.

His parents, his wife, and two brothers, J.G. Wheatley and Dossie Wheatley preceded him in death.
