Poll workers are the backbone of Tennessee elections, and several counties across the state are in need of more poll workers before the August and November elections. According to the Tennessee Secretary of State, Carroll County is one of 35 counties in need.

During early voting and on Election Day, poll workers help polling sites in their community run smoothly by conducting a variety of tasks including greeting voters, answering questions, explaining how to cast a ballot and use the voting equipment, and counting votes. They play an essential role in ensuring the security, accuracy and integrity of the electoral process.

Poll workers are compensated for working during early voting and on Election Day and for attending any required training sessions.

Tennesseans who are 16 years of age or older — regardless of political affiliation — are eligible to apply to be a poll worker. Those who are 18 or older must be a registered voter in the county.

Poll workers must be able to read and write in the English language, cannot be a candidate or a close relative of a candidate, and cannot be supervised by a county or municipal elected official on the ballot.

The following government employees can serve as poll workers: all city, county and metro employees (unless working directly under the supervision of an elected official on the ballot) and all State of Tennessee employees. Federal employees should consult their Human Resources Department to ensure eligibility.

Apply to become a poll worker at GoVoteTN.gov.
