    After a month-long competition to master the most words in Vocabulary.com’s 2023 Spring Training Challenge, McKenzie Middle School students took first place in their division. The students collectively learned and mastered 29,850 words.

    (May 26) — The May meeting of the McKenzie Garden Club was at the home of Mona Batchelor. The devotional was given by Marsha French who shared a poem entitled “What Heaven Means to Me” in which the writer enumerates the joys awaiting us in Heaven. These included: no night, no tears, no sorrow, sin, nor death; perfect weather and being reunited with loved one; meeting the old saints and hearing their stories; and, of course, seeing Jesus and living in His presence.

  • Spring Employment Aids State, Tri-Counties

    TENNESSEE — The unemployment rate decreased in all 95 Tennessee counties during April. The Tennessee Labor Force Estimates indicate a growing labor force across Carroll, Henry and Weakley counties. Each of the three counties had a lower unemployment rate than the state rate.

  • Mustang Colton King Places Second in 1600-Meter Run

    MURFREESBORO — Colton King, a 2023 graduate of Huntingdon High School, placed second in the 1,600-meter run in the Class 1A, 2A State Track and Field Championship in Murfreesboro. He had a combined time of 4:25.457 for three races. The winning runner was Will Douglas of Camden Central, with a combined time of 4:25.40 for three races.

  • Small American Flags Adorn Gravesites of Veterans

    Members of the McKenzie American Legion, other veterans, and friends placed small American flags at the gravesites of veterans on Sunday, May 28. The flags were placed at the graves regardless of whether the veterans’ death was service related.

    HUNTINGDON (May 29) — The Town of Huntingdon hosted the 20th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Monday at Thomas Park on East Main Street in Huntingdon. The ceremony remembered those who died in military service to our country, as well as veterans and active military personnel. There was reserved seating for veterans and a red carnation for every veteran who registered at the table prior to the ceremony.

    McKENZIE (May 29) — Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, commemorated to honor the memory of the troops who never returned home from battle. The City of McKenzie hosted a Memorial Day ceremony Monday at 10 a.m. for citizens to honor and memorialize loved ones who sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom.

    The Tennessee Department of Education released scores from the spring English/language arts (ELA) TCAP assessment Wednesday, May 25, revealing that more than half of Tennessee’s third-grade students are not meeting proficiency in the subject. While some area schools have higher proficiency percentages than the statewide average, McKenzie, Hollow-Rock/Bruceton, Milan and West Carroll special school districts have found their percentages below the state average.

    Well, time has claimed another music legend. This time it’s a more local legend, Tina Turner. I can’t honestly say she was one of my favorites but her music catalog is impressive. Songs like “Proud Mary,” “River Deep – Mountain High,” “Private Dancer” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It” are probably on my playlist somewhere in my iTunes. For me, when you say Tina Turner the first thing that comes to mind is her role as Auntie Entity in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and yes, as I write this synopsis on the Queen of Rock n’ Roll, Thunderdome is playing on my television.

  • McKenzie Soccer Out Manned in Opening Round of Championship

    The McKenzie Boys Soccer team (11-3-2) ran into a juggernaut Tuesday, May 23 as they faced off against Madison Magnet (17-0-1). The Rebels lost 5-0 in the opening round of the TSSAA State Championship Series. Brice Becerra and Charles Damron had the only goal attempts for McKenzie. Goalkeeper Tellez Renteria had four saves in the matchup. Madison Magnet went on to win the 1A State Soccer Championship defeating Alcoa 3-2 in the final round. Photo Courtesy Jess Martin

  • McKenzie Rebels Stunned in Semis

    The McKenzie Rebels baseball team made a run at the state title for baseball but was stopped in their tracks by the East Robertson Indians. The Rebels split with the Indians but were sent home after their 2-5 loss on Thursday, May 25 at the Spring Fling in the TSSAA State Tournaments.

    With football season just around the corner, McKenzie Middle School announced a change in its football coaching staff. Coach Paul Carroll recently announced he will step down from his position as head football coach, making room for the third generation of Coach Chappells to step in.
