  • Orders Now Accepted for Tree Seedlings

    NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Departments of Agriculture’s Division of Forestry (TDF) is offering more than 30 varieties of tree and shrub seedlings for reforestation and conservation projects. TDF’s East Tennessee Nursery in Delano, Tenn., is accepting orders until April 1, 2024 or while supplies last.

  • Tennessee Highway Patrol Accepting for Citizens’ Academy

    NASHVILLE (October 5) — The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) is accepting Citizens’ Academy applications for the Nashville classes. The Citizens’ Academy starts on Oct. 26 and will meet weekly until Dec. 7. The one-day-a-week sessions are on Thursdays and run from 5:45 to 8:30 p.m. CT. This is not a state trooper academy.

  • Mustang Football Placed on Probation

    HERMITAGE (October 2) — Following an investigation concerning an on-the-field altercation during the Huntingdon-Milan football on Friday, September 22, the TSSAA placed both teams on probation until the end of the 2024-2025 school year. The schools were fined $500 annually, amounting to $1,000 each over the two-year period. Though schools are on probation they are still allowed to participate in post-season play.

  • Alivia Green Elected Class President

    Alivia Green, a McKenzie High School graduate, attending Union University College of Pharmacy to obtain a Doctorate in Pharmacy was elected to serve as class president for the 2023-2024 year. As president, Alivia’s mission statement includes, “My vision is to create a strong sense of community and unity within our cohort, speak for the class as a whole, while following the guidelines as stated in the PSGA constitution, as well as encouraging and comforting my peers on harder days.”

  • Former MHS Football Royalty Members Presented at Homecoming Parade

    Six past members of McKenzie High School football homecoming royalties from 1948-64 were presented during the 2023 MHS Homecoming parade. The ladies enjoyed a gathering prior to the parade hosted by the McKenzie High School Alumni Association (MHSAA) and McKenzie City Florist and More, which included refreshments and time for reminiscing about their days at McKenzie High.

    ATWOOD (October 5) — Members of the West Carroll Special School District Board of Education moved through its monthly meeting by reaffirming its COVID policy and announcing the school now has two Student Resource Officers (SROs) in addition to the school’s Student Safety Officers.

    McKENZIE (October 6) — After failing to make a definitive decision on the de-annexation of Holland Farms, the petition is back on the McKenzie City Council’s agenda for Thursday night, October 12. In the September meeting, a motion was made to deny the petition but failed to achieve a second or another motion thus preventing a vote from being made on the matter.

    McKENZIE (October 6) — Belle O’Brien is the 2023 MHS Football Homecoming Queen. She was crowned during pre-game ceremonies at Rebel Stadium on October 6. The candidates all entered the stadium in a convertible driven by Steven Berryman.

    Susan Dyer, a teacher at McKenzie High School in Carroll County, took part in the “Humanity of Leadership” program on Sept. 27 as part of the WestStar Leadership Program’s WestTeach Program. Participants in the WestTeach Program are K-12 teachers who are nominated by their principal who aspire to remain in the classroom but want to be a leader in their school and community.

Martin with two $2000 scholarships to be auctioned off. Bethel University has worked with the McKenzie Rotary Club for many years in supporting the auction.

    McKENZIE (October 5) — During a special called-meeting Thursday evening, the City of McKenzie at the recommendation of Mayor Ryan Griffin, hired Beau Pemberton of Weakley County as the city’s attorney. Laura Keeton of Keeton Law Office in Huntingdon, who was at that point the city’s attorney, was released from the city’s service after the meeting. The Council voted unanimously to replace Keeton with Pemberton. Not present for the meeting were Vice Mayor Jessie Townes and Councilperson Josefina Batton.

    KAILUA-KONA, HI — An elite field of professional triathletes from around the globe is preparing to descend on Kailua-Kona, Hawaii for the first-ever women’s edition of the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship. On Saturday, October 14, the race will see, in addition to the pros, more than 2,000 age-group women swim, bike, and run in this iconic and historic location, just a few weeks after their male counterparts raced in Nice, France.

  • Huntingdon Mustangs Continue Winning Streak with 41-6 Win Over JCM

    JACKSON (October 6) — Friday night, Huntingdon traveled to Jackson Northside to battle Jackson Central-Merry (JCM) in a regional matchup. This was the first contest on the field between the two schools. The Mustangs dominated JCM with a final score of 41-6, the only Cougar points of the night coming after a fumble recovery late in the fourth quarter with a running clock. Each first-half possession for the Cougars resulted in a punt, turnover on downs, or fumble. The Mustangs took advantage of each opportunity and scored 34 unanswered points in the first half with five successful scoring drives.
