    McKENZIE (December 19) — Fans at the McKenzie-Milan prep basketball game on Tuesday, December 19 at the McKenzie High School Gymnasium, witnessed history when Savannah Davis, a McKenzie senior and Middle Tennessee State University signee, set a new state scoring record for the number of 3-point goals in a single game while she also matched the MHS high-scoring record for a single game.

Commencement exercises began at 1 p.m. at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 16835 Highland Drive, McKenzie. The keynote speaker was Mr. Joe Norval, principal and CTE director of the Carroll County Technical Center.

    McKENZIE (December 19) — McKenzie High School football standout Marquez Taylor is transferring from Austin Peay to the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP). As part of the coaching carousel, Austin Peay’s Head Coach Scotty Walden, a native Texan, was offered the top spot at UTEP. Taylor announced Tuesday he was leaving the Governors to join Walden and the Miners team.

    GLEASON (December 22) — After 50 years of service with the Bank of Gleason, Martha Arnold will step aside as president and serve in a consulting role. December 31, 2023, will be her last day as president and Preston Frazier will move into the role. Martha has served in this role since 2011, when at that time she became the first female President of the Bank of Gleason.

  • Lake Barkley Remains Identified

    MAYFIELD (December 18) — After 24 years, the remains of a man found in Lake Barkley have been identified as Roger Dale Parham, a fugitive wanted for rape in Arkansas. In May 1999, fishermen on Kentucky Lake dredged a man’s remains. According to officials with the Kentucky State Police, the body was “wrapped in heavy tire chains and anchored with a hydraulic jack.”

    HUNTINGDON (December 21) — At the close of the 2023 calendar year, more money from the state is possibly finding its way to Carroll County. During the Carroll County Budget Committee meeting on Friday, County Mayor Joseph Butler asked for the committee’s blessing to pursue and accept possible grants from the state.

    Public Intoxication — Timothy Ray Mayo, 51, was arrested on December 5 for Public Intoxication and Possession of a Handgun while Under the Influence. Reporting officer Justen Roberts reported that he spoke to an employee at Hucks in Huntingdon who informed him a customer has been the restroom for over an hour. When he entered the restroom, the defendant had noticeable sores and his pupils appeared to be dilated. This led the officer to believe that Mayo was under the influence of methamphetamine. Mayo was also carrying a firearm on his waist, which the officer removed for the safety of them both. He was then placed under arrest for public intoxication and possession of firearm while intoxicated.

    BENTON, Ky. (December 20, 21) — The Huntingdon Mustangs opened the FNB Holiday Classic tournament against the hosting school the Marshall County Marshals. The Mustangs were defeated 75-42 by the Marshals moving to the consolation bracket. Huntingdon then faced the Christian County Colonels. The Mustangs didn’t fare much better as they were put out of the tournament 73-56.

    McKENZIE (December 19) — On Tuesday, both the girls’ and the boys’ basketball had solid wins against the Milan Bulldogs. The Lady Rebels whooped up on their opponent 86-33, a game in which Savannah Davis knocked down 17 three-pointers (a state record) and accumulated 60 points for the game. Davis tied the Lady Rebel individual single-game record, equaling Anna Comer’s 60 points against Hollow-Rock Bruceton in 2016.
