    McKENZIE (May 18) — A meet and greet was held at the Hometown Hangout for two new head coaches at McKenzie High School. Dru Emerson, former assistant Lady Rebels basketball coach, was promoted to head coach. Coach Justin Lowery is joining the Rebels staff from Gibson Co. High School, where he has been head coach for the Pioneers basketball team since 2012. Lowery is the new head coach of the Rebels basketball team.

  • Gasoline Prices Fall During Week

    TENNESSEE (May 20) — Average gasoline prices in Tennessee have fallen 9.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.12/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 3,821 stations in Tennessee. Prices in Tennessee are 9.3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 1.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 3.3 cents in the last week and stands at $3.86 per gallon.

  • FCE Clubs Hold Joint Meeting

    Carroll Lake was the beautiful backdrop of a joint meeting of the Carroll County FCE clubs. Macedonia and Bethel/Eastside FCE had a picnic lunch and great conversation, getting to know each other better. There were four members from Macedonia: Martha Peters, president; Sarah Brown, Gaye Coleman, and Judy Gipson; and two members representing Bethel/Eastside: Gail Eubanks, president; and Danita Laman.

  • State Court Ends Warrantless Property Searches by TWRA

    Tuesday, May 21

    State game wardens cannot enter private property in Tennessee without a warrant, the state’s Court of Appeals ruled last week. The case was originally heard in Circuit Court, 24th Judicial District, by Judge Donald Parish, now retired. Parish ruled TWRA did not have such broad authority.

  • Trial Begins in Decade-Old Murder

    DRESDEN — The trial in State of Tennessee v. David Swift, is expected to start Wednesday, May 29, 2024, in Dresden, Tennessee, before Judge Mark Hayes. The defendant in this case is David Swift.

  • Rotary Hears About Bethel’s Global Studies

    McKENZIE (May 14) — Members of the Rotary Club of McKenzie heard from Bethel University’s Global Studies program. Stacie Freeman, leader of Bethel University Global Studies, was the featured speaker. She thanked the club members for donating supplies for a service/learning trip to Guatemala, where Bethel students and community members, worked in elementary schools in Guatemala City. Travelers also visited Lake Atitlan, Antiqua, and San Juan.

  • Lee Street ‘Do Not Enter’ Sign Removed, Reinstated Six Days Later

    McKENZIE (May 15) — On Wednesday, The Banner asked its online community to spot the difference between two photos taken on April 26 and May 15, 2024 after it was brought to our attention by two different business owners that the Do Not Enter sign that instructs drivers on Broadway not to turn right on to Lee Street (a one-way street) was removed on May 9 after the city council meeting.

  • Carroll County Moves to Centralized Financing, Cuts Highway Supervisors to One

    Tuesday, May 21

    HUNTINGDON (May 13) — Come July 1, Carroll County will have a central financial management system. During Monday night’s meeting of the Carroll County Commission, the legislative body voted unanimously to approve Resolution 5-01-2024 ratifying Private Chapter No. 57 pertaining to a centralized finance department. This change comes at the recommendation of the Tennessee Comptroller.

  • Memorial Day Ceremonies Planned

    McKenzie Memorial Day Program The speaker is Reverend Garrett Burns, a reserve chaplain with the U.S. Navy. Traditionally, veterans place a wreath at the War Memorial in Veterans Park, downtown McKenzie. Placing the wreath is Dana Deem, retired Air Force representing the American Legion and Steve Davis, VFW Post 4939 commander, U.S. Army retired.

    McKENZIE (MAY 13) — Associates of the McKenzie Special School District were honored for their service during a year-end dinner held in the National Guard Armory on Monday, May 13.

  • Six Tri-County Teams to Play in TSSAA Spring Fling

    Tuesday, May 21

    Six local high school baseball and softball teams are headed to Murfreesboro this week to participate in the TSSAA State Championship Series. McKenzie Rebels Baseball, Huntingdon Mustangs Baseball, Huntingdon Fillies Softball, Hollow Rock-Bruceton Lady Tigers Softball, Westview Lady Chargers Softball and Henry County Lady Patriots Softball will take the field Tuesday afternoon in the double elimination tournament.

    McKENZIE (May 15) — The McKenzie Rebel High School Baseball team played the Richland Raiders in a double header for a shot at the TSSAA State Championship Tournament. In a best out of three format, the Rebels were able to two from the Raiders to advance to championship series.

  • Fillies Advance to State Softball Championship Series

    HUNTINGDON (May 17) — On Friday, the Huntingdon Fillies defeated the Summertown Lady Eagles 2-0 in the sectional series. The Fillies advance to TSSAA State Softball Championship Series.

  • Mustangs Take Two from Summertown, Advance to ‘Boro

    HUNTINGDON (May 16) — The Huntingdon Mustangs knocked out the Summertown Eagles two straight games in the best of three series in the sectional round to advance to the TSSAA State Baseball Championship Series. The Mustangs took game one, 1-0, and game two, 5-2.

    Schedule VI Drug Violations — Shannon Office, 35, of Jackson, was arrested on April 27 for unlawful drug paraphernalia use and lights required on motor vehicles. Officer Roberts observed Shannon’s car driving on Main Street when he noticed the driver’s side headlight was out and initiated the traffic stop. Officer Roberts could smell marijuana when he contacted the driver. Roberts asked the driver and passengers to step out of the vehicle and he found several unidentified pills, small amounts of marijuana, and a scale inside of a purse in the backseat. Then inside of the trunk of the vehicle was 66 grams of marijuana. The driver said it was not hers but took responsibility for everything in the car.

    Theft of Property — Bobby Spain, of Trezevant, stated that someone came on his property without his permission, and removed his 1970 18 horsepower Evinrude outboard motor from his 12-foot Jon boat. Bobby stated that he had painted the motor cover from blue to tan and the lower part olive color with black prop. Bobby stated that he last saw the motor on May 8.
