The Macedonia Family and Community Education (FCE) Club met on April 10, 2023 at 1 p.m. at the community center. President Martha Peters called the meeting to order and read the thought for the day, “Kind hearts are the garden. Kind thoughts are the roots. Kind words are the blossoms. Kind deeds are the fruits,” Kirpal Singh.

McKENZIE (April 12) — Inglenook Book Club held its monthly meeting on April 12, 2023 at 3 p.m. at Lakeside Senior Living Community in McKenzie, with 21 members in attendance. The meeting was called to order by President Carolyn Moore, extending a thank-you to her co-hostess, Mary Newman. Together they served delicious homemade strawberry cheesecake, mixture of nuts/chocolates, and assorted beverages. The tables were decorated with floral designed plates/napkins, and a small potted floral arrangement-definitely a sign that spring is here.

NASHVILLE — Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed the Transportation Modernization Act, historic legislation to create a new strategy and invest $3.3 billion to accommodate Tennessee’s record growth, address traffic congestion and meet transportation needs across rural and urban communities. The bill received bipartisan legislative support and was backed by dozens of organizations across the state.

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) today announced 102 grants totaling $232,709,981 from the state’s American Rescue Plan (ARP) fund, part of which TDEC is administering in the form of drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure grants. Since August, TDEC has awarded and announced $634,404,544 in grant funds through ARP programming.

NASHVILLE — On Friday, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee marked the close of the 2023 legislative session, which includes the successful passage of his $56.2 billion budget and full legislative agenda as outlined during his State of the State address in February.

HUNTINGDON (April 27) — Carroll County Electric Department Board of Directors had a short agenda for their monthly meeting on April 27. However, Ryan Drewry, general manager, said the department has some long-term needs to consider.

The Carroll County Commission meets Monday, May 8 with an agenda containing four resolutions, two of which deal with amendments to the 2022-23 Highway Budget. Resolution 5-02-2023 amends the Highway Fund Budget $80,000 transferring from the Workers Compensation Insurance line item into the expenditure accounts to adjust line items due to cost increases in maintenance ($10,000), travel ($10,000), and equipment ($60,000). Resolution 5-03-2023 amends the Highway Fund Budget to balance the salary by $2,000 due to vacation pay for employees who have retired.

McKENZIE (April 25) — In a special called meeting, the City of McKenzie Board of Mayor and Council unanimously decided to notify the State of Tennessee that the municipality plans to leave the state insurance plan. Not present for the meeting were Vice-Mayor Jesse Townes and Councilperson Josefina Batton.

Carroll County Chamber Hosts National Day of Prayer The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the 72nd Annual National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at 8 a.m. at the Carroll County Airport. The theme for 2023, is Pray fervently in righteousness and avail much emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to return to the God of our Fathers in reverence for his Holy name. The national theme comes from James 5:16, where it says, “Pray fervently in righteousness and avail much.” The public is invited to attend as we pray for our nation, our state, our county, and our neighbors. Working in newspaper business and political area, you come across a huge assortment of folks. The longer you’re in the business you see multiple generations of folks have a tendency to follow in their forefather’s footsteps. In the April 25, 2023 edition of The Banner, local students bore witness to The Tennessee Civil Court of Appeals. One of the justices on the panel was Frank Clement, Jr. son of former Tennessee Governor Frank G. Clement. A few years back while I was a member of the McKenzie City Council, I had the privilege to welcome the former governor’s other son, Bob Clement, to town.

I met Henry Walter “Hamper” McBee in 1965. He was a mid-thirty, fast talking, skinny guy wearing an out-of-place black vest and sporting a huge, oversized handlebar mustache. He was sitting on a table in Tubby’s Drive Inn singing a song he’d written about a local highway patrolman named Bill Malone.
