McKENZIE (January 12) — Katie Chesser, a three-sport athlete at McKenzie, plans to continue her athletic career at Dyersburg State Community College. She committed to play softball on Thursday, January 12 as her family, fellow players, and fans looked on.

CARROLL COUNTY (January 3) — The Grand Jury of the Carroll County Circuit Court issued 91 criminal indictments when they convened on January 3.

McKenzie — The physical roadside sign that welcomed passersby to McKenzie and Bethel University must be totally removed because it encroaches on the state right of way on State Route 22N.

TREZEVANT (January 10) — Three Trezevant Councilman were administered the oath of office after winning their respective races in the November 2022 election.

McLEMORESVILLE (January 10) — Mayor Phil Williams was recently re-elected to a four-year term in McLemoresville. His tenure as mayor began in 1977 following a four-year term as councilman, which began in 1973. He has served the citizens of McLemoresville for fifty years.

HUNTINGDON (January 9) — The Carroll County Commission met Monday evening with a full agenda. The top point of discussion and contention was Resolution 1-07-2023 to amend the budget by decreasing the salary of the Civic Center Director by $15,000 and increasing the salary of the Airport Manager.

McKENZIE (January 12) — After December’s wintery mix, the City of McKenzie has agreed to purchase a snow plow implement to help with the flow of traffic through downtown.

NASHVILLE — State Rep. Brock Martin, R-Huntingdon, was officially sworn in as a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives on Tuesday, January 10.

McKENZIE (January 13) — Friday the 13th proved to be unlucky for two men after they fled from authorities, exited the roadway and struck a tree. Both men had to be extricated from the pickup truck and the driver was airlifted to a medical facility.

HUNTINGDON (January 10) — Carroll County Jail was filled to capacity after an undercover operation spanning 15 months into the sale of illicit drugs throughout Carroll County has resulted in the indictment and arrest of dozens of individuals.

McKENZIE — Prior to the tip-off of the Bethel Wildcats game against the Campbellsville Tigers, ‘Cats Head Coach Jeff Britt was awarded his 500th career victory ball by Bethel Athletic Director Brad Chappell. Alongside him on the court as he received his award were his daughters Ashleigh and Alleigh Britt.

GLEASON (January 10) — The Gleason Lady Bulldogs more than doubled the Bradford Lady Devils Tuesday night. The Lady Bulldogs had two twenty-point quarters to push them to their 60-25 victory.

HUNTINGDON (January) — The 2023 Huntingdon Basketball Homecoming Queen and Court were announced during the halftime of the Huntingdon Mustangs game against Gleason.

HUNTINGDON (January 13) — The Huntingdon Fillies topped the Gleason Lady Bulldogs 60-38 on homecoming night. The Fillies held the Lady Bulldogs to single digits during the first half.

DUI — Justin R. Edwards, 40, Jones Street, Huntingdon, was charged with DUI-First Offense on January 11 after officers stopped his vehicle after a report of a suspicious driver.

Theft — On January 9, Rickey G. Doyle reported that his 2002 Heliz Hummingbird 12 Fish Finder was taken off his Hummingbird Mega 360. The report was filed for insurance purposes, Fish Finder valued at $2,600 and Hummingbird Mega 360 estimated damage valued at $1,400.

Growing up I heard a tale of two gun-toting outlaws from out west robbing the little bank on the square. Which in my mind gave way to the romanticized idea of a John Dillinger or Bonnie and Clyde sweeping into town with Tommy guns blazing followed by a high-speed chase; woe the imagination of a child. Needless to say, this week I set out to find what I could of the real story. Even though it wasn’t Bonnie and Clyde that knocked over the bank, it was still a pretty darn interesting story.
